Lovelace, a graduating senior, topped 14 other contestants from Historically Black Colleges and Universities to claim the title. His win included a $1,500 scholarship and a trophy. Lovelace also won the oratory segment of the competition, which was a key factor in his winning the overall event, LOC Professor Ruby Hardy-Minter said. Each contestant delivered a three-minute original speech titled “As Mister HBCU, how will your platform ensure that the HBCU experience remains relevant in the world of educational privilege?” Lovelace’s platform is to Make HBCUs Great Again – “Returning Pride to Our Thing.” Contestants also were critiqued on punctuality, etiquette, professionalism and presentation. Lincoln’s Dean of Administration and Student Affairs Jerome Offord Jr., congratulated all the contestants the men in a letter dated Feb. 1 "for making it this far in your journey toward leadership." He emphasized they were present because "your peers see something in you that set you apart from other young men. They see you as a positive example of an African-American male, with the potential to make a difference on your campus and beyond — today, and well into your future." Lovelace of Jackson, Miss., is an interdisciplinary study major with an emphasis in foreign language. He is a member of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. Professor Hardy-Minter said Lovelace is the second Mr. LeMoyne -Owen College to capture the Mr. HBCU title. The first was Jerome Heard in 2006. Mr. LeMoyne-Owen College Krishun Lovelace sits on his throne Saturday (Feb. 3) at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., after topping 14 other contestants from HBCU institutions to win the national Mr. HBCU title during the 14th Annual Mister HBCU Kings’ Leadership Conference and Competition. http://www.loc.edu/default.asp If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
