CONFERENCE TO PROMOTE DIVERSITY IN DESIGN CAREERS
The three-day, hybrid event features poet Nikki Giovanni and journalist Jelani Cobb

San Marcos, Texas, Feb. 10, 2022: “The State of Black Design,” a groundbreaking conference and career fair to increase employment of Black designers, will be held March 4 to 6 at Texas State University and online. Renowned poet Nikki Giovanni and journalist Jelani Cobb are among the conference’s dozens of speakers and presenters. During the career fair, jobseekers will interview with recruiters from firms, such as Google, IBM and Microsoft and Cisco.

“While design careers are growing and wide-ranging, professionals of color continue to be underrepresented in the industry,” said Omari Souza, conference organizer and an assistant communication design professor. “The State of Black of Design was started to uncover and tackle the root causes of that disparity.”

The conference is in its third year and attracts leading Black designers, educators, activists, recruiters, and students nationwide. Its panels and workshops will explore design diversity, best practices, and design activism. More than 1,000 participants are expected. This year’s theme is “Family Reunion” to mark the first time the conference will allow some in person attendance.

The State of Black Design began in 2018 at Texas State University, and it’s now the premier gathering for networking, professional development, industry innovation and job opportunities. It’s the only national effort dedicated to linking young Black professionals and recent graduates to design careers.
