Intercultural Cancer Council Hosts Cancer Survivorship / COVID-19 Conference In Partnership With Meharry Medical College

The Intercultural Cancer Council, TN CEAL, Tennessee Department of Health, and Meharry Medical College are hosting "Spring Goes Pink": A Cancer Survivorship and COVID-19 Conference. The conference takes place on April 8th from 8:00 am - 1:30 pm at Meharry Medical College’s Cal Turner Family and Student Life Center. It will bring cancer and covid survivors, patients, and caregivers together to provide them with educational resources, information, and insight. The forum will include dynamic panel discussions by guest speakers Ben Ho Park, MD, Ph.D., Thoris Tabb Campbell, RN, and keynote speaker Karen Patricia Williams, Ph.D.. New research suggests that although cancer mortality is decreasing across all population groups in the United States, certain groups remain at a higher risk of developing or dying from specific cancers.

“African Americans have higher death rates than all other racial/ethnic groups for many, although not all, cancer types, says the National Cancer Institute.”

Along with educational and informational resources, attendees can access free haircuts, hairstyling, bra fittings, vaccinations, boosters, and more. Hundreds are expected to attend the free conference in person and virtually. The conference will highlight lived experiences of Black and Latino cancer and Covid survivors like Tasneem Ahmed. Tasneem lost her brother to covid and her mom to Colon/Liver Cancer months before finding out she had breast cancer.



“I know I’m here because of 2 things…God and family! I had unbelievable family support from my daughter, siblings, nieces, aunts, and friends. I never went to one single appointment alone,” said Breast Cancer survivor Tanseem Ahmed.

ABOUT MEHARRY MEDICAL COLLEGE
Located in Nashville, Tennessee, Meharry Medical College is one of the nation’s oldest and largest historically black academic health science centers dedicated to educating physicians, dentists, researchers, and health policy experts. Founded in 1876 as the Medical Department of Central Tennessee College, Meharry was the first medical school in the South for African Americans. It was chartered separately in 1915. Today, Meharry includes a medical school, dental school, graduate school, and applied computational sciences school; and is home to the Center for Health Policy at Meharry.
