Intercultural Cancer Council Hosts Cancer Survivorship / COVID-19 Conference In Partnership With Meharry Medical College
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on April 03, 2023

The Intercultural Cancer Council, TN CEAL, Tennessee Department of Health, and Meharry Medical College are hosting "Spring Goes Pink": A Cancer Survivorship and COVID-19 Conference. The conference takes place on April 8th from 8:00 am - 1:30 pm at Meharry Medical College’s Cal Turner Family and Student Life Center. It will bring cancer and covid survivors, patients, and caregivers together to provide them with educational resources, information, and insight. Registration is free at https://the1joshuagroup.com/mmc-pink/.

The forum will include dynamic panel discussions by guest speakers Ben Ho Park, MD, Ph.D., Thoris Tabb Campbell, RN, and keynote speaker Karen Patricia Williams, Ph.D.. New research suggests that although cancer mortality is decreasing across all population groups in the United States, certain groups remain at a higher risk of developing or dying from specific cancers.

“African Americans have higher death rates than all other racial/ethnic groups for many, although not all, cancer types, says the National Cancer Institute.”

Along with educational and informational resources, attendees can access free haircuts, hairstyling, bra fittings, vaccinations, boosters, and more. Hundreds are expected to attend the free conference in person and virtually. The conference will highlight lived experiences of Black and Latino cancer and Covid survivors like Tasneem Ahmed. Tasneem lost her brother to covid and her mom to Colon/Liver Cancer months before finding out she had breast cancer.

“I know I’m here because of 2 things…God and family! I had unbelievable family support from my daughter, siblings, nieces, aunts, and friends. I never went to one single appointment alone,” said Breast Cancer survivor Tanseem Ahmed.
