Selma University Gets National Attention
|
Posted By: S. Moore on August 14, 2023 The National Register of Historic Places listed Selma University as a historical site. Selma University is included as one of the historic places registry under Civil Rights Movement in Selma, Alabama MPS. Dr. Keith Hebert, a professor at Auburn University, prepared the application for nomination and research. Hebert has spent a lot of time in Selma working on the Bridge Crossing Jubilee and Bloody Sunday event. “The only reason I ever met Selma University’s president and got to know them is because of this project,” Hebert said. Selma University President Dr. Stanford Angion said he’s pleased with the recognition for the school. “I am very elated that the University has been officially named on the National list of historic places and I am very grateful for Dr. Keith Hebert of Auburn University and the staff at Selma University for researching and submitting the application,” Angion said. “This is a great milestone and is expected to open the door to many opportunities for the University to gain support in preserving and telling the story of our Historic District. The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archeological resources.
