Harris-Stowe State University Student Receives the Taylor Geospatial Institute Diversity Fellowship

Harris-Stowe State University Student Receives the Taylor Geospatial Institute Diversity Fellowship
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on November 30, 2023

Christian Blue, a senior Information Sciences and Computer Technology (ISCT) major in the Anheuser-Busch School of Business at Harris-Stowe State University (HSSU), has been awarded a $15,000 Taylor Diversity Fellowship.

This award was granted by the Taylor Geospatial Institute (TGI) and supports students from underrepresented groups in the geospatial sciences to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the geospatial field. Nominations for the Taylor Diversity Fellowship are made by Research Council members for their respective institutions. HSSU’s Director of the Institute for Science and Math, Dr. Tommie Yvette Turner is the TGI Research Council member and HSSU’s Vice President of STEM Initiatives and Research Partnerships, Dr. Freddie E. Wills, Jr. is the TGI Governing Council member.

As an inaugural recipient of the Taylor Diversity Fellowship at HSSU, Blue said that he has had opportunities to participate in geospatial research projects and present his research at various local and national conferences.

“This past semester I worked on a TGI funded undergraduate research project with Jessie Bleile and the support team of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA),” Blue said. “The focus was on ports that support the trade of petroleum, oil, and lubricant as they are essential to worldwide growth, facilitating the flow of fuel energy to many industries. I had the opportunity to present the project at the Geo-Resolution Conference at Saint Louis University (SLU), and I will present my research at the 2024 Emerging Researchers National (ERN) Conference in Washington, DC. Also, I will submit the project for presentation at the 2024 GEOINT Symposium.”

Dr. Turner said she is very proud of Blue’s research accomplishments while matriculating at HSSU and knows that he will have a bright future.

“Christian has been actively engaged in different geospatial related undergraduate research projects that have broadened his knowledge base and expanded his skills in ArcGIS (a geographic information system software),” Turner said. “By participating in undergraduate research, Christian will be ready to utilize his knowledge, skills, and abilities in a Geographic Information System (GIS) graduate school program or in the professional workforce.”

Blue said HSSU played a vital role in his success.

“I greatly appreciate the HSSU Faculty, TGI, and the TGI Diversity Fellowship for helping me realize my potential, which motivates me to continue to push forward on my journey to becoming a great asset in helping make a difference in the world.”
