HBCUS LEADING THE WAY IN MEDICAL DIVERSITY: THE IMPACT OF ABBOTT SCHOLARS PROGRAMS
(full story below)
Abbott Laboratories has partnered with four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) through the Abbott Scholars Program to address the lack of diversity in the medical field. Launched in 2021 with a $5 million commitment, the program aims to reduce systemic barriers hindering diverse students from pursuing medical careers.

The initiative provides scholarships at HBCUs and minority nursing associations, with plans to award 300 scholarships by 2026. Participating institutions include Howard University and Meharry Medical College. Jermaine Blakely, a scholarship recipient, emphasized the program's significance in easing financial burdens and enhancing academic capabilities for minority students.

In addition to financial support, Abbott collaborates with the National Black Nurses Association and the National Association of Hispanic Nurses to promote diversity in healthcare. The program seeks to address the underrepresentation of Black and Hispanic medical professionals, a critical issue for improving patient care, according to Blakely.

Despite efforts, statistics show limited minority representation in medical schools and among practicing doctors. For instance, only 10% of medical school enrollees in 2023-24 were Black, despite Black people comprising 12% of the U.S. population. Abbott's program aligns with efforts from institutions like Xavier University of Louisiana to foster more Black medical professionals.

Abbott's initiative with HBCUs and minority nursing associations aims to increase diversity in healthcare by providing scholarships and support, highlighting the importance of representation in the medical profession for enhancing patient care.
