Sweethearts?

I just recently learned about sweethearts and pearls and doves and what not... and I've been gettin mixed reviews. Some people say that its a good stepping stone to pledging whatever I choose to pleadge, some say its not a stepping stone, but a good way to network and some said that it would ruin my reputation before I even got a chance to gain one... could someone gimme the insight on them... thanx in advance
