um... growing up white then going to an HBCU?

What's up people.... I just joined the board today, and was reading some of the older posts and actually saw alot of posts on this topic and wanted to ask something about it. Basically up until I was around 10 I had all black friends, was just a typical black dude. Then my mom ended up moving to some preppy white town, which I had no control over. Over time i started to change more and more due to obvious reasons... i started having white friends, and taking interest in things not considered 'black'. So I had no problem with this for a long time, just was nice to have friends in a new area and people to do stuff with. But now that im getting older... im realizing the reality of how white people are... such as white girls from these preppy towns not being interested in talking to a black dude, or white guys just looking at you as some **** tryin to intrude into their culture. So I find myself wanting to go to a black college now... i guess u can say im sick of being around white people (it was never my decision in the first place, i just had to adapt). My question is.... did anyone else here grow up in a situation like this and find it hard to fit in at a black school. I'm worried about going there and then not fitting in because im not 'black enough'. I adapt pretty well to people around me so I figure after being there a while i'd eventually fit in fine.... but at first i'd feel like its a culture shock to some extent. Just would like to hear some experiences with black people growing up around white people and then going to an HBCU... or hell, even if u didnt grow up in a situation like that, you probably could still tell me what you see at your own school and what its like for you. Like... do you know anyone that you're cool with that acts 'white'... or would you be the type to say 'i'm not talking to no preppy **** n*ggas". Be real... im tryin to hear the truth. I'm also confused on how I should act if I did go to a HBCU.. ofcourse people gonna say just be yourself, but its possible to be yourself all while trying to fit in to some extent. If a dude was to try and fit in and hang around you off some Carlton type sh*t.. he'd obvoiusly get clowned (im not white to that extent but jus saying), so it just seems that its common sense to try and relate to people and if they can't relate to yo **** talking about some sh*t like going snowboarding, why even bring it up.

in my opinion it shouldn't be so hard to transition...i go to a all white school...have a lot of white friends, and a lot of black friends...but i think that at every HBCU there are people who grew up in white neighborhoods/towns/cities...it shouldn't be hard transition because you do have black family...right? :? ...don't sweat it...you'll find someone who you're compatible with and you'll make good friends...you said you adapt easily, so don't sweat it...and if somebody says something to you about being preppy..tell them to "SPELL IT!"

i had a similiar situation... i was a military brat, so i was so used to different things... i was always on the base, and there were more white kids than black kids, hell, i lived in Rapid City, SD, and i was one of only 3 black dudes around... but as soon as i got to Charlotte, NC... i got to adapt back into the urban culture.... but like Chan said, it shouldn't be that hard to transition... just do what's best for you, and i don't blame you, after being in Charlotte, there was no choice for me BUT an HBCU... so just do what's right

you sound like me son... basically ill just say that once you start hangin around other cats like you... u'll adjust quickly and fit in fine. And about the white girls... yeah you definietly need to come over to a HBCU and talk to your own sistas... having nothing but white shawties to talk to... damn i shutter to think what that's like.

I attended a white school for 5 years. Then top of that, I lived in a white neighborhood. Pretty much after elementary school I went to a diverse school. It wasn't that as hard as I thought it would be to adjust.

Adapt? Adapt to what? Anyone worth anything at an HBCU will accept you for who you are. Just be yourself man. It's really the only freedom you've got. Thunder

Damn right, Thunder! I couldn't have said it better. I still haven't fully adjusted to Howard. Of course in 9 years, I never fit in at prep school either, but that's just me. In college, people come from every background. The "white" jokes come up occasionally, but more from myself than others. We're all different. You've got wanksters and Carltons and everything around and in between. Do you. Warning from Personal Experience: Being here has made me a little racist. I can elaborate if you'd like. Most important is this: The abundance of beautiful women makes it hard to see white women the same way ever again! But that's just me.

I feel what you're saying, but there IS a big difference between white and black culture... so when I meant adapt, i just meant getting used to the change, since it definitely would be one.

I understand. I haven't had to adapt nearly as much as I would've thought, but I fully understand. I guess you gotta find your niche. Don't lose yourself because some narrow-minded fool tells you his way is the only way to be "black". There's differences between black/white, south/north, NY/Cali. There's adjustment and understanding required no matter who you grew up around. Get in where you fit.
