The Princeton Review's The Best 351 Colleges has become one of the nation's most popular guides for college-bound students. Among the historically black colleges and universities that make the cut into the 2004 edition are Howard University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, Fisk University, and Hampton University. Not to be outdone, Kaplan Inc., the Princeton Review's major competitor in SAT test coaching and other services to help students gain admission to the college of their choice, has now published The Unofficial Unbiased Guide to the 328 Most Interesting Colleges. This 710-page college guide purports to "cut through the hype and the blizzard of admissions stats with exclusive insider's information." Profiles of seven historically black colleges and universities are included in the Kaplan guide. Here are some highlights: • "Tuskegee University boasts high-quality academics, groundbreaking research, and a tremendous sense of history." • "Spelman College's commitment to women's studies along with its pride in its African-American heritage combine to make a unique learning environment." • "The atmosphere at Morehouse is supportive. There is a unique bond between students which helps them create a surrogate family." • "Hampton has the best campus of all the HBCUs." • "Attending Xavier is the closest you can get to a guarantee that you'll get into medical school." • "Fisk students say that the personal attention they receive from their professors is the school's greatest strength." • "Students from across the nation and more than 100 foreign nations bring to Howard a variety of experiences, ideas, and interests that create a dynamic student body."
