Greek Life in General, what is your opinion?

Okay, I have always wanted to ask this question about greek life in general. The question is, what is your overall perspective of greek life, was or is it worth your time and effort now that you have pledged an organization? Are we as BGLO's making a difference or are we just flowing with the tide? Let me hear your opinion or opinions on that. Non greeks feel free to give your opinions as well...

Just because from the outside looking in you don't see it, doesn't mean its not happening. I think Greek Life is what you make it (just like anything else). There can be great opportunities to become active on campus and in the community, network, and meet people you may have otherwise not. It was definately worth it to me and there are BGLOs making a difference in this world everyday and certain people flowing with the tide.

^^^Well.. I guess greek life is different on your campus.. but I wouldn't be so quick to generalize... For example, Perhaps at those charity events the greeks are there and very active, but feel its not the time nor place to bust a stroll... Think about it... I think that there is always room for improvement, but in general RIGHT NOW.. I feel that Greek Life ON MY CAMPUS is making an active difference in our community and area at large.....

I'm on the outside looking in also, but I can tell you that the campus greeks do indeed do charity events, etc, etc. But those actions are overlooked because those who are snooping in the groups business are too busy looking in the club and at stepshows instead of at a habitat-house project....or a YMCA...or a local elementary school...or at a senior home....or at a neighborhood block party.

Do you have a problem with BGLOs? You're failing to notice that in essence these organizations were founded with clear purpose in mind to uplift the African American community. Each organization has its national programs. Being that this is the case, these organizations have not moved away from that. Do you participate in their community service events? Are you a part of the listservs that communicate when the community projects take place? And don't get it twisted, my Alumni chapter represents harder than many undergraduate chapters. You shouldn't make generalizations. A wit a big **** Phi!

Interesting topic... If I may respond to some stuff from "the outside looking in"... I think that there is a duality of BGLO life: the undergraduate years of "pledging" (or MIP to be politically correct), stepshows, partying, calls, jackets, sitting on plots, taking pictures, etc. which does include some community service. However, you can't expect XYZ or ABC to be at EVERY SINGLE community service event, homeless shelter, **** walk etc, because they are STILL UNDERGRADS! They came to college to get a degree, NOT JUST to be apart of the BGLO that they joined. They have to balance greek life with academics, church, etc. Then there's the alumni life, after you've educated yourself, you spend more time working in the community, giving money (because you're salaried and have insurance lol), and being more visible because you have more TIME and RESOURCES. You still can party and wear your letters, but it isn't your goal anymore. You aim to serve and embody what your founders envisioned the org to be. I think we as GDIs need to give Greeks some slack (when they are on the ball)...we expect them to be superheros as soon as they cross and we forget that they are students just like us.... Think about it.
