White Fraternity/Sororities vs NPHC

Don't know if this question has been ever posted, but this was a recent discussion in our BSU program: How do you feel (Non-Greeks) included, if a black joined a white frat or sorority. AND if they joined both NPHC & the white sorority/fraternity. I personally think (as a non-greek) that it should be fine. Not that your getting the best of both worlds- but you can (if your about it) make connections and network through both organizations- using the both white and nphc for business- but still have that cultural and familia interest. If you know what I'm saying.... what do you think? peace

First of all, if a person (white or otherwise) is already a member of an IFC or NPC frat/sorority, they cannot join an NPHC frat/sorority, and vice versa. Your last paragraph disturbs me, and is probably the reason no one answered this. I'm not Greek, but from what I hear from Greek friends/acquaintances and see in the organization -- white and black -- they dont "use" their organizations for anything. Being in a social org like NPHC, IFC and NPC isn't about networking and making connections. It's about sisterhood/brotherhood, service, and scholarship, esoecially in black Greeks.

Actually, Greek organizations can be about networking and making connections....it comes with the brotherhood/sisterhood and all that good stuff. Networking is one of the GOOD reasons to go Greek especially the larger GLOs.

Actually, at the University I attend (not HBCU) females that are in NPC sorority's can join NPHC sorority's and vice versa. I'm not sure about males but I'm pretty sure its the same.

Why wouldn't someone thats in a BGLO use their frat/sorority as a resource. IFC & NPC do it all the time and I have heard from NPC sororities that actually is another bonus in becoming a member of their sorority. Because what if your looking for a job -and have the resume to back it up- and the person interviewing you is part of your GLO or just in a sorority- that can help a person in the long run- I wouldn't mind having the extra boost. People do it all the time and networking should be encouraged in BGLO.

Well being that I am in a PWO, I have frat and sorors that are also apart of BLGL's and it does broaden the spectrum of connections not just for the person but many times for all parties involved. Many times it can be a positive thing for all parties involved.

How so? Give us a concrete example. For many BGLO's if you hold membership in any social greek letter organization, you will not be allowed to join. And if you do slip through the cracks and they find out, you can be expelled from that organization. I hope you're not getting IFC/PHC orgs mixed up with honorary organizations or social fellowships that sometimes pledge like KK Psi, Phi Mu Alpha, Pershing Rifles, Beta Nu Rho, etc...

I understand what you are trying to say but just for clarification sake Phi Mu Alpha does not fall under the umbrella of either of those categories you just managed. Phi Mu Alpha is classified as a social fraternity.

Wow, didn't know that-maybe my information is skewed... I was informed through the Greek department on campus that going greek in both GLO's was allowed. I know its fine for honary organizations- hmm. gonna check up on that.
