I plan on applying to : Morgan State Norfolk State Hampton University Howard University(MY NUMBER ONE CHOICE) As of now, I have a cumulative GPA of 2.4 & a year-to-date GPA of 3.0.It's low because I slacked my sophomore year, but I have really, really improved as a student. I am enrolled in a Pharmacy Technician program at my school that is three credits towards my graduation & also allows me to receive two college credits. I have taken my state exam & I am now a certified pharmacy technician. I have been doing clinicals at a long term care pharmacy. I am currently doing clinicals at Walgreens. The both of these clinical experiences count as community service hours as well. I am also volunteering at a well respected local hospital. I have work experience & I am currently employed. Throughout my high school career, I have been in the following extracurricular activities: Key Club, Drama Club, FCCLA, SCA Vice President of Activities, LGS, History Society, Uzuri, Photography Club, & I've even been a member of Who's Who Among American High School Students. I plan to apply to Howard University Early Action this fall! What colleges listed above do you honestly believe I'll be admitted to?

Honestly speaking from working in the admissions office of a top ranked hbcu, I can tell you unless you address somehow in your essay why you slacked off your sophomore year (like a family circumstance) they will zero in on your bad grades. You will also want to have a high SAT/ACT score. Your activities seem fine, but you must remember and other college-bound students, that your application is in competition with others. It does not stand alone. If Howard is your number one you will be surrounded by students who were their student body president and high school valedictorians. Really, really buckle down your senior year.

I would have to agree with much of the above statement. Admissions will hone in on your grades first, so having excellence ACT/SAT scores will definitely help to counterbalance the gpa. Also remember that Howard has an alumni clause in their app so if you have any alumni relatives that may or may not help...depending on who they are. (Sad, but true).

I will address it in my essay. Also, my high school courses in middle school are great. My freshmen year is great. My junior year is great. It's just my sophomore year that ****! I failed two classes! Algebra II was one of them.

You failed two classes! If that appears on your transcript... I would read the profiles of these schools on princetonreview.com, I am telling you your application will be in competition with kids who went to boarding schools, top ranked public schools, inner city schools, and even international students who are top notch. Just because these schools are historically black colleges does not mean that the criteria for admissions is lowered. It will be a tough battle to get into Howard. I would suggest personally talking to the admissions staff. I watched an admissions officer shake her head over a girl's transcript that had two C minuses in her English courses and those where AP. Like I said it will be a tough battle, but I suggest that you do everything in your power to show Howard that they are your number one, especially with the increase in prospective college students.

I wouldn't count out students who don't have high grades in AP courses. Counselors want to see students challenging themselves in school. They'd much rather see a C- in an AP course as opposed to a C- in a regular course. I had a C in two of my AP courses from Junior year and I was accepted to Howard earlier this year. Just Evy's $0.02

I'm applying to Howard (number #1 choice as well), North Carolina A&T, and Clark Atlanta. My G.P.A isn't all that great either.
