Majority Schools vs HBCUs

As most people in North Carolina will tell you, Halloween at UNC Chapel Hill is pretty damn off the chain. It just so happens that myself and a couple other people from the crew that I hang with went out there (along with about half of A&Ts student population). While out there I hooked up with a couple friends that go to N.C. State. They also brought a couple of friends with them. They were all black. Now, getting to my point... My people that my friends brought with them tried to make it seem like because I go to an HBCU, not only am I an inferior person, but that my school is the absolute worst. Now, I know that A&T is not as big or prosperous as most white schools, but I hate it when they underestimate us. A&T contstantly ranks in the top 10 engineering schools in the country. Which means that for the money, A&T is actually the better school (it costs almost twice as much to attend N.C. State than A&T). But those same people are the ones all up in homecoming when it rolls around. Please don't tell me us folk down here in NC aren't the only people that catch this crap... :roll:

i used 2 think negative about hbcus until a few of my cousins who attend a couple came back with all their stories about their schools and i had a chance to attend a couple of classics and i enjoyed it so much i think truthfully that a lot of people who say and think negative things about hbcus do it in order to make themselves feel better i know 1st hand i was one of them

I feel u on this. One of my friends from high school goes to a LARGE white school and one day last year I was reading her Blackplanet page. She had typed something like "Sometimes I wish I went to an HBCU for the hype bands, but there are not all black people in the real world." Somethin to that effect. I had to check her real quick. HBCUs should not just be noted for how "crunk" the band is or who has the best homecoming. Just because we go to school with black people doesn't mean we won't be able to face the real world. WTH! :? And I have another friend back at home that goes to University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and she totally disagrees with the whole notion of HBCU's. She also said that same thing about "not being prepared for the real world" or some sh*t. But just the other day, U of M was on Morehouse's campus tryna get folks to transfer. They already know that some of the best and the brightest are at HBCU's so these undergrads need to stop sleepin and realize what the professionals already know. :x

Frankly let them think what they wanna. There is no arguing with narrow minded people. They'll learn when an HBCU grad takes their job or their promotion.

...is administration. Most of the schools are not run efficiently like PWIs. Financial aid is a nightmare and it's tough to get the classes you want. The dorms are not well kept and the staff treat students poorly.

Everybody knows that the administration offices and the dorms aren't all shiny and new at most hbcu's. But that's not your purpose for attending a school. Once you get past that, it's one of the greatest experiences one could have. And you can find poor staff members everywhere, not just at hbcu's. The staff that i've come across here at A&T have been excellent aid to me. Personally, i'd rather be in a place where people can relate to me. I'm an Electrical Engineering major, a field which is predominately white. Here i feel comfortable in knowing that my proffesors, who have been in the industry, have the knowledge, skills and the experience to teach me what i need to know before i get into the industry as a minority. Of course that's just my opinion. I don't have a problem with hbcu's.

I got to agree with my aggie fam here, The staff members are a great help to me when I need to get things done. I'm enjoying every bit of my time here at A&T b/c it is a great change from the school & town that I came from.
