LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The two college students who provoked outrage by stealing, killing and cooking a fish from a campus pond -- all while being filmed for the MTV series "Fraternity Life" -- have been sentenced for their misdemeanor crimes.
Casey Loop and Matthew Cox will have to perform 200 and 300 hours of community service, respectively, for their role in the theft, death and grilling of Goldie, an 18-inch koi filched from a pond last year at the University of California-Santa Cruz. They were also ordered to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and pay $500 each in restitution to the university.
The two former members of Delta Omega Chi at UC-Santa Cruz pleaded no contest last month to misdemeanor charges of grand theft and vandalism. Judge Jeff Almquist handed down their sentences Friday (April 16), the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Although MTV never showed footage of the fishnapping on "Fraternity Life" and wasn't directly involved in the caper, Almquist had some harsh words for the network in making his ****.
"It's clear that these were a bunch of guys playing to the TV sets," Almquist says. "This act offended the entire community." The theft of the koi, named Goldie, in May 2003 provoked strong feelings on the UC-Santa Cruz campus and ultimately led to Delta Omega Chi being barred from campus.
At the sentencing hearing, prosecutor Gretchen Brock showed unaired footage of Loop holding Goldie over his head as he returned to the Delta Omega Chi house and of Cox killing Goldie by bludgeoning it with a beer bottle.
Loop's lawyer, Paul Meltzer, portrays the act as a mix of his client being **** and wanting to play for the cameras.
"Some people do really stupid things with a camera trained on them," Meltzer says, "and I think Mr. Loop is one of those people."

In my opinion, I feel it is a disadvantage for the black Greek Life.
MTV shows aspects of the white greek life.
A reality show about the black greek life would be beneficial and logical for the black college students.
I like the shows Sorotity and Fraternity life...but I would DEFINITELY like to see for them to do a black frat and soror one season.
