Uppity Negro... :roll: I've noticed that this is the latest "fashion" trend at HU. I know that perspective freshmen have prolly never heard of it before, but how do the current Howardites feel about it? I know its just clothes, but do you feel it sends a positive messege? I'll post my opinions later...

http://store.uppitynegro.com/ That's their site for those of you who have yet to hear about it. They offer lengthy explanations of what "uppity negro" means (or what it's suppose to mean) and details on what exactly is their purpose. While their explanations are interesting, I must admit that I think they are saying a bunch of nothing. I seriously doubt many of the people they cite as "uppity negroes" would buy into any of this. To me this a classic example of one's poor attempt of turning a negative into a positive. I don't think this is any different than people trying to alter the meanings behind words such as "****" or "b*tch." They get points for being good salespeople, I guess. This is all of course my opinion, and everyone is free to do as they wish w/ their money - they just definately wouldn't get any of mine.

they talk about the name is supposed to represent the blacks among us who have rebelled and revolutionized....but I mean they couldnt think of any other positive name..like maybe "african royalty" "revolutionaries" something lol....i mean the name is just bad planning, cause I know if my white friends saw me with a shirt that said "uppity negro" they would look at me like i was psycho or even if noone black here knew what i was meaning they would think negatively....so i dont agree with the name...the message yeah...but since I dont try to be the definition of uppity i cant support something with that name, cause that would compromise my true background and where i came from, and insult the people who helped me who the uppities may not think matter, who didnt exactly protest but still made a huge difference with the means they had...

I've never heard of that before but its an interesting idea. Only thing that bothers me is that they claim not to be a fashion line or a fad like those bob marley t-shirts. But once people start wearing much of something, it becomes a trend and sometimes isn't the point to get a message across to the masses. Thats it for now.
