Nelly....

I was watching this special on VH1 last night about him.... And he kind of shed light to an issue I've heard a lot of Black people address/complain about.... He made so much sense.... He was saying that, originally (before he hit the radios and became big), he & and his crew (The Lunatics) would rap only about guns, murders, shootings, **** - just a bunch of NEGATIVE things.... Then, someone told them they should be ready to come out to the world, rappin' about positive things....so they could appeal to everyone....and at first, they weren't tryin' to hear it... But they tried it anyway....and of course, it worked (obviously).... So anyway...his point was just that he doesn't really see a point in rapping about negative things because this is the happiest time of his life, and he feels it's no reason to harbor or the pessimistic - he wants his music to reflect his happiness..... I can definitely respect that.... And I was thinking that this might be the reason that a lot of rappers choose to rap about what we consider "garbage" or "soft lyrics" or whatever....particularly speaking on the "dirty south" rappers.... I mean, they might have experience just as much trouble and hard times as the rappers from maybe New York or Cali....but they just would rapper rap about partying and have a good time.... Can't really be mad at 'em for that.... And of course, you're gonna have the ones who have never experienced anything and partying and this "good life" is all they know...which is what we hear in their songs.... But anyway....just thought I'd speak on that....I have a whole new respect for Nelly's music after that special.....I mean, I already liked him as a rapper and loved his songs before, but...the special just gave me an entirely new perception of it all.....

TOTALLY AGREE. THE NEGATIVE STUFF WILL SELL BUT ITS BEYOND POINTLESS TO DWELL ON IT IF WE HEAR IT FROM EVERYBODY ELSE ON THE RADIO. IT DOESNT HURT YOUR SALES IF YOU TALK ABOUT GOOD THINGS IN LIFE. I HAVE SAID THAT HE IS SOFT, BUT THINKING BACK AND THINKING ON WHAT YOU HAVE SAID...I ALSO HAVE A NEW RESPECT FOR HIM.

I don't see how most of them talk about stuff like that and they don't live in the hood or live the hood life anymore.
