This topic was discussed a while back when it was rumored that Howard was going to attain Ivy League status..... It's my understanding that the ivy league status is something that can't be attained. "Ivy League" was a term coined quite a while back to describe some of the oldest white schools (Harvard, Yale, etc.). Even though people now use the term to describe a good school, it's still not technically an Ivy League school. Just like another school for African Americans can't pop up and attain HBCU status.....although I've noticed this site names a couple of Black schools that were started fairly recently. They can be called a Black College or University. But they wouldn't really be a Historically Black College or University because they don't share the same historical foundation as the HBCUs that were founded after slavery. Besides, we shouldn't want to be put in the same category as the ivy league schools. How hard was it to start up and maintain a school for rich white males......not difficult, I'm sure. Our schools were started for people who weren't even considered good enough to be granted citizenship to this country. Many people thought HBCUs would fail because "negroes" couldn't be taught. We weren't allowed to vote, own property, or even walk down the street with our heads held high. We were considered sub-human, yet our schools still thrive. I'd pick the title of HBCU over Ivy League anyday LOL

^^Well stated. You can't become IVY league, I was a title given to the first elite colleges in the country. No matter how much you excel as you school you attain that name. That's why Stanford and some of the other top colleges are not IVY league. Looking at it hypothetically it would be a good opportunity to prove to the world that black colleges can hold their own but at the same time we never get the same recognition as the other IVY's.

^^^cosigns And look at the statistics for African American Med students and Graduate students...a majority attended HBCUs...Xavier, Morehouse, Spelman, Howard, FAMU, Hampton, etc... I would rather succeed in life via attending an HBCU than struggle to prove myself at a PWI. Additionally, I personally believe one can obtain a far superior liberal arts education at an HBCU than at one of the HYPe schools (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, etc.)
