Well, the people you spoke to were not too far off base. In regards to the dorms, visitors are allowed to see the common areas. These common areas include the lobby, front desk, lounge area and computer labs. Seeing the actual rooms is a No-No...I'm not sure why, I think there is a university policy against it. But if you click these links: Residence Life - Howard University and Campus Virtual Tour: Residence Life at Howard University all your questions may be answered without even needing to go into the actual dorms! Now, as far as sitting in on classes I have never had anyone do that in any of MY classes but I'm sure it's been done before. Do you know any current students? What is your intended major? You best bet would be to get someone you know to ask their professor ahead of time to make sure it's okay.

Real talk, if you want a feel for the campus on an actual school day then dont get a guided tour. You will stand out like a sore thumb, lol I can give you places to go and things to do that will make you feel like a real student. You will definitely blend right in....

LOL I don't know why those folks in the admissions office are always so salty either. I still need to set up a tour date myself, but like you I want to get a feel of a "normal" day of school. As stupid as this sounds, the only times I'll be able to visit are times when I know no one will be on campus: Fall Break, Christmas time, etc. these are really the only available times I have to go

Can you visit during your Spring Break? Is you Spring Break in April? I know that might be a little late, but I think that would be the best time. The Greeks are coming out, its hot and everybody is on the Yard! Oh, what and when is your Fall Break? I have never heard of that before...

I think guided tours are sheltered views of the campus. I know when I went to visit Hampton last year, my mom and I actually found some girls in the dorm and asked if they could show us their room. So i would suggest that.

...when they're not given by students. You find the right student and you get everything you'll need to know and more. I used to love giving campus tours.

Me and my mom are trying to go to New York for my Spring Break....but I was planning on going to NY as a graduation present to myself. Actually my SB is from March 31-April 4 so I might be able to work something out. The stupid ole school board in my county decided to "do away" with our Fall Break. But good look TRUTH

I couldn't find the right thread to post this in so I'll ask it here. Question, have you all inquired with your employer or your parents' employers for financial aid opportunities? Many companies set aside money for scholarships and/or internships without 'broadcasting it' and being that yesterday was the start of the new fiscal year, you may put yourself in a good position to receive something. My pops' employer, MeadWestvaco, offers internships only to their employees' families during the summer. That definitely beat workin at a fast food spot! Ya'll might want to look into that, if you haven't already. Free money is always better than a loan!
