Doctoral Degrees & Black Folks

I guess one of my 'true dreams' is to get a Ph.D in sociology or psychology and teach on the college level...why I say 'true dream' is because that's what I truly want to do, but I have other career choices in mind in case... And I think the reason many blacks don't go for the Ph.D is like you said, it doesn't provide a significant income hike. You can go for an MBA or a master's in some of these engineering or computer fields and make way more than a Ph.D would. The majority of those obtaining Ph.Ds do so for teaching college...and how many black college professors do you see (compared to white ones)? Hm. Besides, the Ph.D is three to six years of intensive study, reading, and writing...some people just aren't up to the scholarly work that is required. But the money isn't the problem. Doctoral programs have some of the very best financial aid of any program period. Most offer graduate teaching assistantships or research opportunities, and fellowships to help pay. For example, check out Yale's doctoral page. The fellowships they offer for Ph.D candidates is amazing.
