I was talking to my cousin that attends Clark Atlanta University and she was telling me about the great number of female students that leave school because they get pregnant. How common is this at other HBCUs? Are there any that are pregnant but decide to continue with school? It just seems to me that being pregnant would be all the more reason to stay in school so that you could make a life for your child as well as yourself.

but this aint just a HBCU thang...it happens everywhere else too. I see it happen all the time. My friend is goin to Ohio State this fall wit a 2 yr old, majoring in Pre-Med! I got love and mad respect for her!
I understand that too. I didn't mean to make it seem like it just happens at HBCUs...I was just wondering how it is looked upon at these institutions.

At FAMU they dont really care as long as you arent a pregnant female that holds a high position like in SGA or Miss FAMU. I know last year the girl who had won Miss FAMU ended up getting pregant right before school started. They didnt make her step down but she knew if she stayed in that position she would be VERY frowned up and looked down on. So it was in her best interest for her to step down, and the runner up take the position as MISS FAMU. Im not knocking any female that is going to school and is pregnant. I commend them. But I do agree with the fact that it isnt appropriate for females to be in high position in the school where students, alums, faculty, etc...can see them, and they are pregnant cause they are a representative of the school. If anything, they should wait til after their child is born...and then if they wanna take on some type of responsibility in the school, then do so then.

There are ALOT of pregnant chicks at my school. And they still be going to classes in their last trimester...Trucking up FAMUs hills in that Florida heat. If you ask me they need to start making maternity desks or sumthing, cause all the girls in my classes that have been knocked up, theyre stomachs are to big for them to sit in a desk, so they just end up sitting in a chair and writing in their laps.
This is so off subject...but I thought you went to A&T?

I go to FAMU, and there are so many students with children. I think it's possible for a student (male or female) to earn their degree while raising a child, but student-parents expect too much. There was one girl in my class who got pregnant at the beginning of the fall semester. We were taking a photography class, and the fumes from the darkroom was too strong for her. It was unhealthy for her baby, too. Instead of her dropping the class and taking it another semester, she made a big deal about taking another course in order to graduate on time. I didn't want to take the photography class, but I have to in order to graduate next year. It was her fault that she was pregnant, and if that means she has to delay graduation for a year, so be it. Pregnancy is not a disease that just happens to you, but some student-parents act like their universities owe them something. On another note: I don't believe children should be brought into classrooms, that's the reason why we have New Beginnings (FAMU's day care center). Children, whether they are quiet or loud, are a distraction.

I agree 100%....I cant remember the number of times students children have been brought to class and they are always distracting cause they wanna talk and walk around...and their parent is sittin there tryin to do their work while tryin to keep their child entertained so the baby doents disturb the rest of the students..
