Sooo..I was chillin outside with a friend of mine around 6-6:30pm when she got up and said she had to leave for dinner. I was kinda shocked because i didnt think that many families still sit around the table for dinner...My family used to, but it stopped. And when it did, I noticed a big change, referring to how close we were and how distant we are now.Now that I live with my father (and he's usually at work) we dont sit and eat together.
Now after homie came back, we got into this discussion on how a lot of families dont sit down and talk like they used to and that's why so many black families have been and are falling apart...I wanted to know,do you guys still sit around the table and actually have conversation with your fam?or does everyone go off and do their own thing??and do you believe families grow apart because of this?
Generally, when i go home, it because something is happening. Therefore, we are sitting around the table. Before I left we sat around the table. We talk about anything. My dad is generally in rare form at the table or while we're all riding in the trouble together. For instance:
Mom: Are you getting to sleep okay?
Me: I get to sleep when I can.
Mom: Have you tried the recipie that I sent you?
Me: No
Dad: You mean you don't have a girl? I guarantee you that you'll be asleep, if you aren't then its well worth staying up...
Mom: LARRY!! Not in front of the children
Dad: What?! He's a grown **** man! *looking at me*Have you tried wine?
Me: Errrr...
Mom: LARRY!! You're gonna turn him into an alcoholic!
Dad: No I'm not... Wine will put him to sleep...
And so on...

Same ova here. It's just me and my moms and our schedules are so conflicting since i've started workin for the summer, that we barely even see each other. One of us might whip sumthin up and leave it for the other, or either we just grab fast food when we can. When we are in the house at the same time...i go to my room...and she goes to hers... :?
But from the other responses, i can see that this is sumthin that black families have adopted in recent times. Just not much of a unit anymore. Maybe this is a factor of so many single parent homes, hard workin folks, and peeps too tired/busy to spend a lil quality time. I think family dinners do make a diffence tho. It's a great time to communicate with one another and express things with the people u love. It's definately something i'm going to implement when/if i get my own fam.

But anyway, We don't sit around the table cause it's just me, my momma and my daughter...the 3 ladies
..My older bro lives here too but I hardly see him anymore  and my oldest brothers live on their own....Plus,I work the night shift so I'm not around for dinner...And yes i do think because families dont sit and talk during dinner time, they grow apart. When we lived in NY, we always sat at the table. Not only because we were close but because it's apart of our culture  to sit down and eat. Once we moved to Florida, it became me and my mother eating together and my bros and I drifted apart.....

We never eat together. We all eat at different times because some people gots to go to work early and they'll eat their dinner earlier than everyone else. But...i dont think we've ever sat at tha dinner table. And if we ever did...it was a lonnnnggg time ago!
We get together, especially when I'm home and try to eat together atleast twice a week. We always eat together on Sundays, since all 6 of us pitch in and cook dinner together. We usually go out to the movies and CiCi's pizza or something like this during the weekday.
@ home we stopped eating together years ago. Dunno why. Oh yeah cuz moms went back to school and blah blah blah. But @ my aunts we eat together at least 1 meal per day. It's precious.
