Where are Black Schools headed????

With all this sudden pressure of many HBCU's losing their credit for being a school. I must ask where are our schools headed? Even my school.....the IVY league Harvard of HBCU's.... is falling downhill due to budget cuts and low funding from the government.... And with Bush in office...it seems like the government does not care about these colleges and Universities....(SHOWS THE HIDDEN RACISM) What do you all think> Will black schools be around 25 years from now? In my opinion...I only think a few will surive...sorry to say that.... but we as black people are loosing the battle of education at our own schools.... What are you all's opinion...

The federal government decided they did not have plans in place to forgive their debts. Morris Brown's bond rating was trash, and that's why they couldn't borrow money to keep it open and had to scale back. I feel very sorry for the students there, because I have met very many wonderful people from ole Mo Brown. But I don't hold the Federal Government responsible for them. If anything is telling, it's that the students of Howard University worked together to try to donate to the school. The UNCF, which provided scholarships for several students at the school "only" donated 1.47 million. Where are your black billionaires and millionaires now? Where are their prominent alumni? I know my stance is harsh, but you can't possibly blame Morris Brown losing it's accreditation on the federal government.

President Bush's administration has actually increased HBCU funding by 5 % - 7% over the last two years. The amount of money is really matchsticks compared to the grand scheme of things, but as I said earlier, he's a separatist and doesn't mind supporting HBCUs and other MI's to get his way. He's appropriated close to $400 million dollars for HBCUs and MIs, which does not include the almost 250 million going to Howard and approximately 75 million going to BCC.

I never once claimed I would vote for Bush. . . as a right-leaning moderate I don't like his policies on the economy or his stance on states rights, or fiscal conservatism. However, I won't stand for rhetoric. If you dislike Bush then dislike him about anything except his stance on HBCU/MIs. I work at a university, and my job is to go after contracts and grants. Oh another issue is academically talented African-American students; especially in the south, choosing to attend PWI's. Our schools will always survive, but we have to reinvent ourselves to deal with different markets besides the traditional students. A strength at NCCU is our graduate programs because they are usually night classes. We can cater to the working adult.

They should have useful classes like pimping 101, how to be dealer, car jacking, slap yo ho, hand jobs for crack, etc

Howard and Bethune-Cookman get bookkooo money from the Feds. President Bush has been very supportive of HBCU's, through his commission and inflating the government through grants and contracts being made available. Now I may not like him, but I won't say that he's bringing down HBCU's; nor will I call him racist. Honestly, the root of the problem is our reliance on state and federal governments. Since our alumni giving rates are so low, corporations don't wish to invest in most of us. Some of the smaller HBCU's will catch a bad one, and I wish we could keep them all open. But if that school's alumni don't care about it, then why should anyone else?

true statements as well. All in all. I pretty much agree with u Wile E. It is highly imperative that our alumni gives back. We cannot solely depend on the government to handle our funds, when we have alumni that are graduating and becoming successful in their own right. If u truly have love for the school that was influential in your success, you should be inclined to want to see it flourish and help the students that come behind u. That's how PWI's (the privates in particular) stay on point. We should be motivated to do the same.

i think that if we work hard enough and show that we really need these institutions then they can survive but we have to give back to these schools and not depend on the government cause obviously it's the private schools that arn't funded by the government that is having these problems. we just need to support them emotionally, physically, and financially. even if they're not our own schools, others too.
