Yalll not a real HBCU!!!!!!!!!!! yes its true General Samuel Armstrong!!! founded Hampton Institute and they are ashamed they stuck his statue in the basement of the building that they named after him. As we say in Norfolk "SORRY" that is "SORRY". Be proud of where you got your start. A confederate General.

^Well back in those days when universities were founded, Blacks didn't have money like that to start colleges. Hell we just became free. So because of the good white folk we are here on our campuses today. He might have been confederate but his confederate **** wanted Blacks to get an education.

THANK YOU!!!! So many people get caught up in the name Booker T. Washington. A lot of people fail to realize that he felt blacks should be more agricultural meaning they should work with tier hands just like they did when they were slaves. I do believe Tuskegee was an agricultural school when he founded it.

It isn't a surprise that he is black because this is history. But honestly who cares if he was white, black, chinese, hispanic or whatever. He founded the institue and thanks to him 100 of thousands of people have benjefitted form attending the university. write about something helpful next time.

Now hold on a mintue, you have to keep in mind that Hampton was also an agricultural and mechanical school. However, its main focus was on a classical education, so that students could do more than just operate machinery or farm implements. This would be your predecessor to the current engineering and technology department. What separates Hampton from the rest of the A&M schools is that these school didn't start bring focus on liberal arts until the beginning of the 20th century, whereas Hampton had that focus the whole time.
