I am :x ! I was talking to my aunt last night about my college decision and future. I told her that I plan on going to Hampton, and she feels as though that is a bad choice , and that I would be better off at a non HBCU. She says that they will set me up for the "real world". I feel as though Hampton and other HBCUs can set its graduates up for success. I wanna be the product of a HBCU and become an successful businessman. I also feel as though its not the school that will make me successful but how hard I work to reach my goals. I was wondering what are your opinions on how HBCUS can prepare us for the future in comparision to non HBCUS.If this is a repeated post MY FAULT.

If I had a nickel for everytime i've heard this issue...
I've worked for one CEO and currently a managing partner of two succesful business. They are both alumni from Hampton...
A PWI may teach you how to work for somebody else.
A HBCU encourages you to be the person people work FOR.
I can't tell you how many successful men i've had the opportunity to meet who are also alumni of my school. Not only have they managed to work in corporate environments but they have also managed to pave their own way and take charge of their own fiscal destinies. When I speak with my folk who decided to go on to PWI's it is mainly negative comments. Many of them have no sense of self and they either end up hating the white people they are supposed to work with or assimilating into the culture till they can't identify with us anymore.
I go to an all male, predominantly black school. I didn't realize how vast and beautiful the black diaspora was until i started to attend school in the AUC. So don't let anybody use the "HBCU's lack diversity" argument.
If anything which would rather learn about more:
1. Yourself and your people.
2. How little you know about yourself and another race where the majority cares very little about you.

I am sorry to say, but your aunt is totally incorrect. The best aspect of an HBCU is that it is created for people of color. Their main goal is to produce successful men and women. Most of my friends that go to PWIs say that professors are easy on them because they do not believe that they can handle the work load of their white counterparts. However, at an HBCU, the professors are tough yet nourshing. As for getting an idea for the real world, I agree with my counterparts above. At an HBCU there are so many different people. There are people of color that come from predominantly white schools listening to country and pop, while there are people of color from predominantly black schools listening to rap and hip hop (not stereotyping). Also, many people have different beliefs and viewpoints on the ideas of many different topics. Also, this is just undergrad. You might decide to attend Yale or Harvard for a post-secondary education. Just remember that you determine your destination, and if you chose Hampton, there must be a valid reason that justifies your choice.

umm no offense to your aunt, but did she ever realize that college isnt jail...of course an hbcu doesnt have diversity but of course you can go outside the college after school to get your "cultural diversity" on....i mean I go to Howard in Washington DC and I saw mad white people even on campus, and when i went off campus and went to visit my friends in georgetown, GWu, ...point is, youre not completely isolated from the other races unless you are a hermit inside your dorm room and that is just a huge mistake people make
It all depends on the person.
HBCUs are smaller and more intimate than PWIs. Professors would probably more know your name at an HBCU than at a PWI. The best part about an HBCU is develops you intellectually, culturally, and opens a new perspective every time you talk to someone. No offense but if u the same conversation with 30 people on a PWI campus regardless of race, 15-20 will say the same thing, but on an HBCU u are going to get 25-30 different opinions if not more. Do what is best for you. If u have your heart set on Hampton then that is where u need to be

Oh my goodness .. Mostly everyone in this damn post has said something to **** me off .. But ESPECIALLY .. Monkrenny .. Lil Darryl .. Lovely lady 08 ..
Monkrenny .. How can u say that an HBCU prepares u to be the person that they work for and a PWI teaches u to work for the person .. For one .. Over half of half of black men are in jail .. And there is only 12% pf us in this world so the fact that u know 2 successful alumnis of Hampton does not impress me .. Okay so what u have had a chance to meet successful alumni of ur school .. The black race will never rule the world .. U know alot of successful people out of HBCUs .. But who cares .. 98% of the world successful businesses are owned by white men .. You have white men who have never been to college and still have a successful business that earns more money in a year than you will ever in ur lifetime and u may have 3 degrees ..
And how can u say that u may have no sense of self just because u go to a PWI?? .. "or assimilating into the culture till they can't identify with us anymore" .. And what the fucck is identifying with us?? .. Being late?? .. using incorrect grammar?? .. Limited vocabulary?? .. "Soul Food" .. Hip Hop?? .. Ignorant?? .. Cuz these are a few of the words all all, not just white people, use to "identify" us .. So they come back "professional" .. And non ignorant and its a problem?
And how are u not learning about ur people just cuz u go to a PWI?? .. Im hoping no one goes to college not knowing about themselves .. U have family for that .. If u go to an HBCU to find urself then maybe u need to check urself .. Ive went to perdominantly black schools all of my life and I am still diverse .. u wanna know why? .. Cuz my life does not stop when I exit that school building .. And you act like Black people dont attend PWIs????!?!?!!? .. We do the same things here as yall do there .. And at my institution .. I have not had ONE professor who didnt care about my wellbeing .. Both black and white .. I was treated no different .. They looked out for me .. Making sure I knew how fierce competition was and why I had to keep myself on top .. You are going off of a lot of stereotypes because u are very ignorant to the life of a student at an HBCU
Lovely lady 08 .. What do u mean an HBCUs goal is to produce successful men and women .. Isnt that the goal of every college?? .. I go to a PWI and like I stated before the professors are the same .. My white professors .. my foreign professors .. And my black professors .. Maybe ur friend had a bad experience .. Cuz my professors are tough yet nourishing as well and I go to a PWI .. It is no easy street just because Im black .. You said "At an HBCU there are so many different people. There are people of color that come from predominantly white schools listening to country and pop, while there are people of color from predominantly black schools listening to rap and hip hop (not stereotyping). Also, many people have different beliefs and viewpoints on the ideas of many different topics" .. Okay so wtf .. There are no people like this at PWIs? .. I guess we just have a million white people and two cotton picking niiggers here and there :? .. Noooooo .. We have people from all different backgrounds as well .. We have black people from mostly white schools .. White people from mostly black schools .. Listening to all different kinds of music and all that .. And u said people have different view points at an HBCU as to say Everyone at PWIs agree
:? .. Everyone is different so of course we all have different viewpoints .. That was dumb
Lil Darryl .. What do u mean HBCUs are smaller and more intimate .. That shiit was dumb .. All HBCUs are NOT the same size .. There are alot of PWIs smaller than some HBCUs and vise versa .. And wtf do u mean professors would have a greater chance on knowing ur name at an HBCU .. I highly doubt that .. Once again another stereotype .. Alllllll of my professors knew my name .. And Ive had 7 white professors .. 2 black .. and 1 foreign .. You said "The best part about an HBCU is develops you intellectually, culturally, and opens a new perspective every time you talk to someone" .. So this doesnt happen at a PWI huh? .. I mean everyone I talk to has the same EXACT answer right?? .. You are as dumb as a box of rocks .. You also said "if u have the same conversation with 30 people on a PWI campus regardless of race, 15-20 will say the same thing, but on an HBCU u are going to get 25-30 different opinions if not more" .. No seriously .. Are u really dumber than a box of rocks? .. NO TWO PEOPLE ARE THE SAME .. No matter where u go so how can u say ur gonna get the same exact answer .. Yo .. U done came up with a major **** stereotype of ur own .. And it sounds so damn stupid .. I dont know if ur gonna go to an HBCU or a PWI but u need to get in someones classroom .. QUICK
