I have that book, too.
To whoever is interested, I would recommend a book that came out in February, and it's called
African American Fraternities and Sororities, edited by Tamara L. Brown, Gregory S. Parks, and Clarenda M. Phillips. In my opinion, it's a really good book, and it goes into thorough detail about the historical context of Black Greek-Letter Organizations (BGLOs), the culture of BGLOs, contemporary issues confronting BGLOs, and things of that nature. It should be in such bookstores as Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, Borders, etc. If it's not in stock, then just go to the customer service desk to order it, and they should have a copy within a week or something like that. So, go check it out whenever you can.
Good luck on your research!
Being that I am not Greek, I can't say much. I will say that alot of the things that you listed as "benefits" (for a lack of a better word) of being in a sorority can be done or obtained without being in a sorority. My friend had a scholarship from Delta Sigma Theta when she entered college and she is part of Zeta Phi Beta now. Just because you get a scholarship from a Greek organization doesn't necessarily mean you have to be or will be part of said organization. I will also say that there is a false sense of what goes on in each organization. There is alot more to these people and organizations than what you hear and see. If you don't know what the organization is for do research, because each stands on different principles, but if you don't know why you would join an organiztion your best bet would be to hold off until you learn more about yourself and the organization or not consider it at all. I said a bunch, but that is about all I can say from the outside.

OK
I'm gonna check on you a year out.
I suggest you preserve that above helpful information as you may be using it often.
@Bisonette... well.. i hope you get to come to Howard so that you can get help figuring out e'rythang you want to know... I won't lie to you.. it's a ruff world here...
but I'mma have to side w/ T.A... why would you want to be a part of something you know NOTHING about? For all you know they could require a rib from prospective members, or the massacre of small children (lol.. the sarcasm is to prove a point: that being that you know virtually NOTHING about these organizations)
Please do some research... and make sure you do it quick, some questions just won't get answered when you get to Howard...and TRUST me.. not everyone is as nice and Down2Earth as Kenya.. (but we don't know how much longer that will last (j/k).. so, PM me if you are still confused...
