Greek Life in General, what is your opinion?

Okay, I have always wanted to ask this question about greek life in general. The question is, what is your overall perspective of greek life, was or is it worth your time and effort now that you have pledged an organization? Are we as BGLO's making a difference or are we just flowing with the tide? Let me hear your opinion or opinions on that. Non greeks feel free to give your opinions as well...

Interesting topic... If I may respond to some stuff from "the outside looking in"... I think that there is a duality of BGLO life: the undergraduate years of "pledging" (or MIP to be politically correct), stepshows, partying, calls, jackets, sitting on plots, taking pictures, etc. which does include some community service. However, you can't expect XYZ or ABC to be at EVERY SINGLE community service event, homeless shelter, **** walk etc, because they are STILL UNDERGRADS! They came to college to get a degree, NOT JUST to be apart of the BGLO that they joined. They have to balance greek life with academics, church, etc. Then there's the alumni life, after you've educated yourself, you spend more time working in the community, giving money (because you're salaried and have insurance lol), and being more visible because you have more TIME and RESOURCES. You still can party and wear your letters, but it isn't your goal anymore. You aim to serve and embody what your founders envisioned the org to be. I think we as GDIs need to give Greeks some slack (when they are on the ball)...we expect them to be superheros as soon as they cross and we forget that they are students just like us.... Think about it.

I can only speak for Central State university.... On my campus I have witnessed a few BGLO's doing community service and things of that nature... EXP. The iota's, OES, and the Masons do a clothes drive every year The AKA's and Alpha's sponsor a walk on Martin Luther King's day The Alpha's help clean the cafeteria every Sunday for dinner. The Que's from Wilberforce have a free carnival for Wilberforce and Central State students. The Blue and White Party throw theme parties on Wednesdays for a dollar and sometimes 50 cents... now thats a cheap price... even though it's not community service.... they are very appreciated... Did I mention them be the best parties.... The Sigma's also have plays regarding problems that are on our campus... Problems such as.... :::::"Getting out the hood" :::::"STD's at CSU" :::::"College thugs from the suburbs" :::::"Top ten ways to step your game up" :::::"Guys you cannot be in a sorority" The greeks do alot of things on our campus and it's just because it's not right infront of your face does not mean that they are not doing community service... and stuff.

That's what's up... I try to watch and learn; it seems like the best way to NOT be embarrassed. I believe lot of us outside of Greek life only attempt to see one side of the story... I dont think you have to know XYZs secrets per se to know what being Greek is like... I bet life is harder on the "other" side in some aspects. I think we get caught up with (and I was guilty of it too at a point) who's trying to be down with who and what XYZ member we saw where, etc and so forth and forget the main picture. But I digress... Speaking of community service, I need to step up my game! :?

That's exactly the part that i wanted to stress. Last big campus party my chapter threw was all the way back in 03 (get togethers are another thing tho). We do more forums and community service than anything else. And after we do it, we aren't gonna run around campus screaming at the top of our lungs "HEY EVERYONE...I JUST DID COMMUNITY SERVICE!". We don't have anything to prove. We do community service becuz it is what we are supposed to do. Whether you SEE the community service or not...it's being done. Now don't get me wrong, i'm not going to front like everything in greek life is just positive and peachy. It has it's downfalls, but i don't think that should overshadow all of the good things. We step, we party, and we stroll...is it fun? Yes, it comes with the territory. But there is also ALOT of work that goes into being a member of one of these orgs. One thing a prophyte said to me is "If you're gonna do it, u better love it. U better more than love it...u better be IN love with it. Because this is a marriage." And she ain't neva lied.

i DON'T see many orgs doing CHARITIES or doing anything GOOD for the community
You'd see more of what we are doing if you were doing your share to give back to the community. Should we turn in our service forms to you? People in glass houses....
