Wow nice post sistha!
But for my two cents, let's see which one of the thousands of issues will I speak on today....Oh I know. BET and rap music!! Ok so I know that our generation has grown up on rap music and BET but as we mature (or at least me) we start to see that BET is doing more harm than good to our community. Ok here is where the hard part comes in.
I have listened to rap all my life and am now just starting to break away from it but BOY is it hard. I found that while I have tried to break away from "the stereotypical black male" that I still help perpetuate some of its stereotypes. I have rims on my car, I freestyle, sometimes unfortunatly if you didn't sit down and have an intellecual conversation with me I'm afraid you would just think of me as, what me and my friends refer to as a "typical". But as I educate myself I realize that in order to be a leader I must distinguish myself from the masses and find myself, but boy has the media made that hard for me.
But back to the subject, BET is the number one network (even above local channels) in some places like the islands and Brazil. Do you think that it is doing us harm or good?

As far as hip hop music goes, I have been listening to it ever since I was about 5 or 6 years old. You can say I am a hip hop **** (ask D, he will tell you). I love everything about the culture. But the state of the music right now is stale. Back in the early 90s and even mid 90s, it was in its purest form. I wouldn't say the music has changed since then, rather the creativity. Back then everyone had their own personal style (for example people like Run DMC, Public Enemy, NWA, De La Soul, Nas, Biggie, Tupac, Wu Tang, and so on). The difference today is everyone sees the formula to get rich (have a blazing single, not there is anything wrong with it, and basically talk about jewelry, hoes, and cars). Don't get me wrong, one or two songs that is all good, but an entire CD of it is ludacris (no pun intended). If people in the rap game would take risk and just rap on other stuff, that is how the genre can get back to its purest form. That is why I listen to people like Mos Def, Common, Talib, and Kanye because they talk on real social issues. But I will love hip hop for as long as I live because that is what I was brought up on and that is the music that I will die listening to.
