Last week at this place in DC called Martha's Table. We basically make food for the homeless, and less fortunate families. They also have a day care program but I haven't had a chance to do that because I work during the week. I can't wait until school starts though so I can go at least twice a week because I really like it. Its so laid back and the people are really nice. So for everyone in the DC area you should check that out. They take group volunteers also.

I always do little things when I'm home in the community especially with young men around the 13-18yr old range. Father's are hard to come by where I live so alot of young men need some guidance from young and older influences much like i did. One of these several things that I was involved in is a step team based out of my church that steps at different church and youth functions. It started off with an Alpha from my church a couple of years ago and he asked me to help out and I called one of my homeboys in KKPsi as well and its been pretty tight this summer. The youngest is only 10. Prolly about 4 feet and he kills it. The oldest is 18 and about 6' 7''. It always cracks us up when the get in a line by height but I digress. Most of these kids would be out in the street doing lord knows whats up during the times we practice because there isn't too much else for them to do. So its good they have something to come to once in a while. Outside of the unofficial things, I know one of the last community service projects I did with frat this past semester was participating in an event called "Relay for Life" in ATL. This is pretty much an ALL NIGHT walk-a-thon for the cause of cancer. Pretty much you have to have somebody on the track at all hours of the night and people pledge momney based on how many laps or how long they stay out there. So bascially if people weren't walkin in my chapter they were coughin up some dough and because we are a fraternity of musicians we would sing or serenade some folk throughout the night. It was pretty cool... I usually enjoy myself during events of that nature.

^^^^ Yea my org has participated in Relay for Life at FAMU the last 2 years....you be having ALL campus orgs participating in that. Relay for Life be fun cause they have free food, a dj, games, dance troups performin, greeks steppin...I enjoy it. The only downside about is that Relay for Life is always held in February and March, and being camped out on the track it be FREEZING once it gets dark...

Friday night. I helped prepare 400+ bookbags to be distributed by the Uplift Project, Inc.'s "Back To School Youth Fair". It was definitely rewarding knowing those bags would help some boy or girl with their education and hopefully make fulfilling their dreams a little easier. I would have participated in the BTSYF, but I had a family reunion yesterday. It was last week. I helped provide transportation and did a welcome speech for my church's Annual Mission Program.

All summer; at a community nursing home for the terminally ill. I've taken a personal liking to a few of the residents there so I always stop by on my way from work to take them something and to chat. This is actually something I do on my own time aside from AKA charity work. Many of these people don't get regular visits from family members and simply want someone to converse with for a while. I would surely want someone to do it for me, plus I always like hearing stories about the past and absorbing all that wisdom (the average age there is 90)

Ok, so what does and doesn't count as community service??
In my book it is anything that is does not have a self serving benefit. Spending time tutoring youth would be community service, unless you were getting paid to do it. If you are being financially compensated, then it makes it self serving.
Actually, i consider helping others as self serving because it makes me feel good about myself to make someone else feel good about themselves. Like ive completed a mission But as for the last time ive done community service, well, its been awhile and its a sad shame. Will be gettin back into the swing of things within the next few weeks though

I was just about to say that... But Relay for Life was so fun, even though it was cold last year... I volunteered in a 2nd grade class for a month, as a teacher's aide. This is in one of our impoverished neighborhoods and is one of the lowest ranking grammar schools in the state. The school is on academic warning, and I was helping one of their teachers prepare them for the ISAT. They need a certain number of students to meet standards in order to stay open. Me and my friends went to a youth center in Tallahassee a few days, until my friend had money stolen from her. The director refused to compensate her for the loss. But she finally paid her back out of her own pocket. We told her never to bring a large sum of money on volunteering trips again.lol I also help out with my area's Upward Bound program. I tutor some students, and tell them how college is.... and what to prepare for.

ummm...i do it everyday when i actually try to hold a conversation with people who are mentally challenged. Just yesterday i was teaching soundcheck how to pronounce simple words and enunciate his vowels. Dang...what is Morehouse really teaching these young men nowadayz? :???: no, but really. Ummm...since i've been home i haven't done any "official" service. But next Sunday i'm supposed to be a speaker at my church for Annual Education Day and speak to the congregation about putting education first and all of that good stuff. Speaking of which...i need to start workin on that and lookin up some scriptures  and the last thing i did at HU was Walk For America with my sorors, which basically promotes funding for research in aiding premature babies. I luv da babiez :-D
