Black Colleges: Am I right or wrong?

So Im a Senior in highschool and I was in class one day just chillen and talking with a student teacher about my college plans...So I was talking about Hampton and Spelman and this boy asks, "Can only black professors teach at black colleges" and I was like "no" and my student teacher says "yes" at the same time... ...Its so weird because its like NO ONE is educated about black colleges. Black colleges doesnt mean that ONLY black students get in and ONLY black professors teach there right? Well thats what I explained to them. That would be segregation. I just explained to them its just kind of like that because the schools were meant for black students in the beginning since whites wouldn't allow blacks in the schools and as time progressed they started to embrace their culture but it is not necessarily just for black students and no other race...hence the word "Historically Black"...as in History...as in the past. Am I right or wrong...maybe it is all black teachers but I wouldnt think so.

Oh I did...I was just kind of shocked that a student teacher would think this...that means there are grown people running around who know nothing about HBCUs

man i'm glad i went 2 a black hs...i was pretty well informed i'd say tho the downside 2 that is u get the stereotype 2 alot of schools as well rather than if i just had some white guy read up on it for me n spit out facts oh well

I am currently a high school senior. My high school is predominately black. The counselors are very open about the different routes we can take. The only complaint I have is about a representative from a non-profit org that main purpose to help with the college application/scholarship process. She is the stereotypically white person. I can't stand her. First she tells me not to apply to any HBCUs since they don't have any money. Okay. I applied anyway and got some full tuition scholarships. :grin: Good right? Well I told her and she still had something to say. She feels it would be a waste of time for someone with my academic talent to go to one of those schools. :???: She is trying to convince to me to attend a PWI. She believes that a PWI will give me more money, but I feel a full ride is a full ride no matter where it is. I told her today that I was going to attend Tuskegee in the Fall. She actually looked at me like she was disgusted and asked "Why?" I told that white heifer so many people dream of attending a HBCU and I could actually make mine a reality. I told her off and told her she didn't have to worry about me anymore.

Ha ha that rep must be from Cleveland Scholarship Program...they mean well (sometimes)...I went to HS in Cleveland as well and our counselors knew about the HBCUs but our Scholarship person advisor told us that HBCUs dont give money and that we could always do them for grad school. not many of my classmates knew about HBCUs, since I went to a racially diverse school and when I was headed for one I had to explain where my school was (after all these same people think that Black planet is a racist site...dummies). And yes, the counselors/teachers up here will always tell u that a PWI is better, no matter how much money u get...that is just how they are (real ignorant, huh?)

to be shocked girl its sad but true their is stupidity and ignorance in all ages and unfortunately that student teacher was VERY dumb in my opinion she needs to READ up on things before she goes around giving fake advice and answers. Omg it killz me how some people be and this **** supposed to be teaching our future black youth? huh heeeeell nah not mynes mm im glad you told them the right thing cuz they was lost forreal and for all of yall who never heard of an HBCU until Drumline omg thats craazy to me but i guess everyone isnt in reach of HBCU's like other even so you guyz could of researched but its a good thing u kno now now that you all kno spread the word to the next one make black culture more than a rumor but a movement u kno the future HBCU recipinets gone need yall info!

yeah the lady is from the Cleveland Scholarship Program. Those people get paid to do nothing. I don't understand how you can pay someone to go on Fastweb.com to search for scholarships. I can do that myself. All they do is print out info then post it on the wall or tell you to go to a website. They never tell you anything useful. :x
