This is kind of based on a late-night/early-morning discussion that I was having with a friend of mine. Do you think that color discrimination is still prevalent in the African-American community? If so, what do you think it says about how we view ourselves and the world around us?

.... wow reall good discussion guys.... like Mia said the question stated "Do you think that color discrimination is still prevalent in the African-American community?",,,, the awser is yes.... and thats it ... yes... i was watching a film on it and basicly thats the reason that tuskeegee jus got its first dark skinned president in the 80's..... and darkskinned mayor then too.... jus sayin....

If it's not nitpicking, it's twisting, and now it's just plain ignoring. Whatever. Oh and another thing: If African-American elitism and color preferences have been in existence before slavery, then how could it possibly be a result of slavery and 'white is right'? We were here playing color games about three hundred years before Columbus got lost and played it off as discovering the New World! Meaning one thing: we had never seen a white man in order to garner the opinion that he was of the better race! Hey, it can be said that slavery further perpetuated the color preferences that we ALREADY had and now see in the African-American community today. But it sure didn't start it.

that's a concept i've never been introduced to, and sorry but i won't take it at face value. perhaps you could point me in the right direction to where i can verify that for myself?

i learned in class that many Light skiined house..negros thought that beacuse they were fair skinned that they were an upper class form of africans..(really beacuse they were decendants of the master or wife,,) but as we all kno they were all slaves because the status of the child followed the mother.... exp free daddy plus **** mama equals **** off spring.... thats why ,,, but i never herd of an eleitist Black.... the first blacks in america were induntred servants who came from england.... but the rights of them were restricted as well....

The great Napoleon Bonaparte once said, that "History is written by the winners". Just because it's not found or taught in our school systems doesn't mean it didn't occur. You just personally have to go look for it. I could give you books and even more links, but then I'd be doing something that you should be doing for yourself. I press towards the elitist community because the elite little more than people of great wealth, opportunity, and wisdom in a community. Ones who are often fit to govern in a set hierarchy. W.E.B. Du Bois called these folks in our community the "Talented Tenth". Elite doesn't always mean snobby and offputting. That alone is just human nature. But I digress. Even so, to go on to say that the color preference issue began with slavery is incorrect on its own standing. To say that would make color preference solely an African-American problem. It most is certainly not (Just like how ghetto is not a Black thing). Every ethnic group has had an issue with color preferences.
