TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY, AL — (August 31, 2004) — Tuskegee University has again ranked among America’s “Best Colleges,” according to U.S. News & World Report.
Tuskegee ranked 31st — up from 32nd last year — among Southern schools on the regional list of “best universities” offering the master’s degree, noted the 2005 edition of the “Best Colleges” guidebook. Of the Alabama schools on that list, Tuskegee earned the third highest rank.
“Tuskegee University’s ranking in the latest edition of U.S. News & World Report underscores the University’s 123-year commitment to educational excellence through our cutting-edge research programs, innovative curricula and dedicated faculty and staff,” explained Tuskegee University ’s President, Dr. Benjamin F. Payton .
“ Tuskegee continues to attract and graduate the highest caliber students from the state of Alabama and throughout the country,” he said. “We are confident that our efforts to produce the nation’s best trained, most empowered students will continue to be recognized at the national, state and local levels.”
Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to confer baccalaureate, master’s, professional and Ph.D. degrees, Tuskegee University offers more than 50 areas of study and 11 graduate programs. National and specialized accreditation and approvals are enjoyed by the University’s programs of study.
Tuskegee is the only Historically Black College or University in the nation to confer the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and the only HBCU with a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering. Tuskegee recently launched a second Ph.D. program in integrative biosciences.

The 2005 edition of The Princeton Review lauds Tuskegee ’s campus newspaper. The Campus Digest’s effort to fulfill its role as the student voice of Tuskegee University landed it as a favorite among Tuskegee students in the recent edition of The Princeton Review's special The 357 Best Colleges issue. The Campus Digest took fourth place for best university newspaper with Howard University, University of Mexico and Brooklyn College wrapping up first, second and third respectively. The Campus Digest is produced and operated entirely by students with advisement through the Office of Marketing and Communications.
Tuskegee ranks among the nation’s “Most Interesting Colleges and Universities.” Tuskegee University is one of only seven Historically Black Colleges and Universities and four Alabama schools listed among 328 colleges and universities as the most interesting to attend in the 2004 edition of The Unofficial, Unbiased Guide to the 328 Most Interesting Colleges. According to the guide, Tuskegee ’s main academic strengths lie in its science and pre-professional engineering programs. It is also the leading producer of African-American engineering graduates in chemical, electrical, mechanical and aerospace engineering, as well the only Historically Black College in the nation designated as the location for a National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care.
The June 3, 2004, issue of Black Issues in Higher Education, ranked Tuskegee University as one of only 35 Historically Black Colleges and Universities among the Top 100 institutions conferring baccalaureate degrees to students of color in 2002-2003. Tuskegee is one of the top 15 H BCUs granting degrees in biological and biomedical sciences and in math and statistics. The magazine also ranked Tuskegee third among all HBCUs for degrees granted in agriculture, agriculture operations and related sciences. Tuskegee is listed among the top 10 leading producers of African-American engineering graduates.
Tuskegee has the "best quality of life" of any Alabama school , according to the 2004 edition of The Princeton Review’s Best 351 Colleges. Tuskegee is sixth on the national list of schools with the best overall quality of life. Likewise, the University was the only educational institution in the state and among HBCUs in the country honored in the sub-category.
Tuskegee University also ranked one of America’s "Best Colleges" by U.S. News & World Report in the 2004 edition. Among Southern schools who offer diverse degrees at the master’s level, Tuskegee is third among HBCUs and third among colleges and universities in the state of Alabama. Overall, the University is tied for 32nd in the region.
The July 3, 2003, edition of Black Issues in Higher Education found that Tuskegee is No. 1 in the state of Alabama, 10th among HBCUs and 27th among all institutions of higher education in conferring the coveted "first professional degree" regardless of predominate ethnic group. Tuskegee is also tied for the No. 1 spot in the state in producing Blacks with master’s degrees in engineering, 3rd among HBCUs and tied for 21st in the nation.
The June 5, 2003, edition of Black Issues in Higher Education notes that Tuskegee ranks in the Top 25 producers of Black baccalaureate graduates among HBCUs. Tuskegee is second in the state of Alabama, 21st among HBCUs and is 50th among all institutions of higher education, regardless of the predominate ethnic group.
Black Enterprise magazine lists Tuskegee as one of the Top 25 Colleges for African-Americans . The 2003 list, the magazine’s third biennial index, places Tuskegee at No. 21 for its stellar academic programs, affordable tuition and small class sizes.
