The Morehouse Mindset - inherent or learned? Posted on 01-15-2004
Doubleguy2

I've heard from many people that the men at Morehouse are arrogant, or even elitist. Do the faculty ingrain that in the students, or are the majority of their students arrogant to begin with?

Does it?

Absolutely not. No matter what resources I have, it depends on how I personally use them, its the difference between **** laude and kicked out thats why at morehouse, alumni are called Morehouse Men, but the students are called Men of Morehouse. Just because you come doesn't mean you'll finish

Britefuture, the statement does contain the word "most," therefore it is not a generalization. This would have been a generalization. "Morehouse men are arrogant." Before you start ripping on people to make yourself feel better, check your facts. Now, on to the topic. A friend from my church goes to Morehouse, and he said that the "Morehouse Mindset," not only exists, but that people are pressured into adopting the mindset for fear of being ostracized and judged. While certainly not all students of Morehouse are arrogant, is it safe to say that fairly hefty percentage of the population is, regardless of whether it's learned or not? Furthermore, does this "pressure" exist?

you see "most" where??? as far as you using the word "majority," THE SENTENCE SAYS ARE THE MAJORITY OF STUDENTS ARROGANT TO BEGIN WITH...that would imply the rest picked it up along the way... i don't need to rip ppl to feel better...i have a spelman mind-set...therefore, i'm better than you anyway.

This Mindset you are all talkin about is little to nothing. let me start by saying that men of morehouse and morehouse men are two different categories. The way in which most of my fellow brothers of morehouse carry themselves is far from arrogant or conceited. People who have a certain level of maturity act in different ways and your experience and the situation you are in usually lead you in the way you are going to handle business. Men in general are proud and outspoken and have the ability to lead or follow and like to be apart of their surroundings and not just watch it. The men that I have encountered at morehouse are respectful and educated just like the men i encountered at hampton, howard, Clark, or any other school that is teaching their students how to deal with society when they graduate. It is not as if the men of morehouse are macho or the morehouse men are arrogant. It has a lot more to do with the level of respect and dignity they have for themselves and what they represent.

Amazing, we're considered arrogant. Yet you have 3 page-long discussions about US! There is got to be SOMETHING that keeps puttn' Morehouse's name in ya'll mouths. Anyhow, the "arrogance" that people say Morehouse students/alumni have is very relative. What may be considered arrogant to one person is considered confidence to another person. The same thing has been said about Spelmanites. In both situations, you've got people who are just general **** that are socially **** and will probably remain that way. On the other specturm you have people with common sense and an enstilled sense of confidence. Morehosue doesn't "create" anyone's persona. All it does it amplify what was already there. It's just like when you join a fraternity. If you were LAME before you crossed over, you'll be LAME after you crossed over, 'cept you'll have a jacket and maybe a cane to supplicate to your LAMENESS.
