Greek Life in General, what is your opinion?

Okay, I have always wanted to ask this question about greek life in general. The question is, what is your overall perspective of greek life, was or is it worth your time and effort now that you have pledged an organization? Are we as BGLO's making a difference or are we just flowing with the tide? Let me hear your opinion or opinions on that. Non greeks feel free to give your opinions as well...

I think we as GDIs need to give Greeks some slack (when they are on the ball)...we expect them to be superheros as soon as they cross and we forget that they are students just like us.... Think about it.
I totally agree w/ you. I'll be the first to admit that I have a tendency to not see Greeks as students/regular people. Sometimes I only see the paraphernalia and consider them "that Alpha/Kappa/Que/Sigma/Iota guy" or "______ the AKA/Delta/Zeta/SGRho" or something like that. What's crazy is that I know a couple of Greeks and I have 3 who are my friends. I'm getting better w/ seeing Greeks as individuals, but I still have a ways to go. I hope I didn't offend any Greeks. If I did, I apologize.

I'm working on that too. I think it's normal though. It's funny though; two of my REALLY good friends are Greek now and I don't see them as such... I just see them as the same old girls that I kicked it with before their letters. I'm glad I still have that prospective of them.

As a GDI and only seeing things from the outside, and to keep it real...I see alotta announcements in the school paper about Greeks having forums on different issues, but their more beneficial activities on campus are never advertised as much as a party they are having and whatnot. Im not saying that they dont do their share of community service activities, and Im not up on 8am on a saturday morning to know...but generally speaking when greeks have their more serious events held on campus its not advertised as much as their party would be....You will receive about 50 flyers and hear alotta word of mouth about the foam party XYZ is throwing, but when it comes to a seminar they may be having on campus you wont hear NEARLY as much about that as u will a party.

The greeks at my school throw alot of seminars.... I rarely attend though because sometimes I get worried that they may think that I'm interested in joining their org.... and I don't want them to think that... The fraternities also throw seminars but they are usually for the men... on how to get jobs, and the importance of tutoring... and other things of that nature.... alot of the men on my campus don't go but if they did they would learn alot. I feel that the greek life on my campus is probably the only thing doing things to better our school.... It's crazy on the YARD.

more advertising is usually done for parties because (generally...) more people will come out to a party as a result of the increased advertising than they would for another event (at least around my area). The venues for parties are usually larger than that for other programs as well, meaning more advertising has to be done to ensure a good turnout. Also, parties are a good source of revenue for chapters so that they might run other programs in the area, or donate to local charities. The better the success of a party, the more it will allow you to do in the community. However, this is not to say that an organization shouldn't make efforts to properly 'get the word out' on all the other events that it does to ensure a good turnout for the size of the venue its being held in.

I can only speak for myself... but I feel that maybe if the organizations hold seminars and other events as a whole then maybe more people would attend. Okay okay let me elaborate.... Instead of just having a seminar held by AKA, or just Zeta.... Why not have a seminar held by all the sororities.... I think that would be a way to get more people to come and it would emphasize greek unity on the campus. When I see a flyer up for a seminar i think twice about going if it's not part of the organization that I am interested in. I don't want anybody to think I am interested in a organization that I'm not interested in.
I actually suggested that to a friend of mine ... I figured that it'd be nice to have a NPHC week and have different things that would not isolate you or emphasize the face that you want to be in ABC/XYZ fraternity/sorority. They do that a lot in PWIs to promote greek unity/black power, so I don't know why it doesn't happen more often in HBCUs... it'd probably never happen @ HU.. just because of how stuff is... but oh well... Kenya.. I was just thinking... if greek orgs had stuff right b4 the deadline for community service points, people would come to get those RSVP points... and I mean.. by that time, people are online, so it really doesn't matter... just a thought...

True, i know how thirsty folkz are for those RSVP points. Peeps don't want to be homeless. Only thing is, like cutiepie & u already stated, people are cautious about attending events held by a greek organization becuz they don't want to appear as tho they are interested. I mean if u think about it, community service could easily be done with the NAACP, Habitat for Humanity, Circle K, etc. So more often then not, it's done with a greek org to get your face out there
