Clear Up The Misconceptions of The Greek Life

Im from Cali where there are no HBCUs. So, I dont really know all that much about Sorors and Frats. However, at least 5 of my friends including me will be attending college in the fall and we want to know whats the deal.Some of them are thinking about pledging.I mean from TV I get mixed messages. Like I see the sisterhood and brotherhood as a positive for blacks and it can bring us closer. Then we I be seeing all the hazing and disrespecting and what not I dont know what to think. So, basically what are the good Soror and Frats groups out there and what they stand for? Will my college life be better if I try to join sorority?Should I date frat? Help me because Im in the dark. Bring me to the light. P.S. Not sure if it makes a difference but my friends are going to Clark and Im going to Southern University Baton Rouge so are the sororities any different because they're different schools or what?

Yeah, Tamisha Koko is right you will encounter some mean spirited people on college campuses. So don't despise the wisdom that God gave you when dealing with certain individuals. The best bet is for you to focus on your school work because that is the point of going to college is to get a good education. Even though for some, joining Greek organizations adds some perks to their college experience. Yet, you don't have to join them to have a great college experience or to make friends. Some of my best friends are non-greek, and we have a sisterhood! Some other advice is not to mention anything to anyone, including friends, about what you are considering pledging. You can't trust no one but yourself! (remember that!) You will find out that the people you started out with as freshman's are no longer your friends when you are a junior or senior. It works like that in college because of the influx of people coming in and out and people do change. Blutifully Human also gave you some good advice. You can start out by researching organizations websites and to decide which organizations beliefs line up with yours. Now someone on this thread suggested the "prospect protocol" and I wouldn't suggest reading all of that stuff. Some people gave good advice, but some of the stuff is real superficial and silly. So you have to use your own discernment on what is wise information or just plain foolishness on that thread. Anyway, sister girl I wish you luck, and also make sure you find a good church home while you are in school. Having a good church home is so vital while you are in college. It keeps you focused on things that are really important in life and it keeps you grounded, because there are so many people that fall to the waste side while they are in college. You have so many people that come at you with hidden motives: male and female! So make sure have a prayerful life. Pray about people you meet, and ask God to reveal their character. Nothing can be hidden from God because he knows people's hearts. Pray for God to send the right friends and people for you to be around.
