BLACK ENTERTAINMENT= BUFFOONERY?????

WE HAD TO DISCUSS THIS IN CLASS TODAY. THE TOPIC WAS DO YOU FEEL THAT BLACK ENTERTAINMENT MEANING MOSTLY COMEDY IS MAKING THE ENTERTAINERS OUT TO BUFFOONS. AN EXAMPLE WAS MARTIN'S SHOW (BEST SHOW EVER), HOW HE I GUESS ACTED CRAZY AND JUST OFF THE WALL. AND HOW COAL WAS ACTIN DUMB ALL THE TIME. WELL I FEEL THAT SOMETIMES ENTERTAINERS PUSH IT TO A BUFFOONERY LEVEL BUT ITS JUST ENTERTAINMENT. THEY HAVE A FLYER AT HOWARD SAYING TO BOYCOTT BET. CUZ IT SAYS THERE IS MORE TO BLACKS THAN WHAT YOU SEE ON BET. THIS IS TRUE BUT SHOULD WE NOT SUPPORT BLACKS IN WHAT EVER THEY DO. WE ARE THE ONLY RACE THAT DOESNT SUPPORT OUR ON RACE. INSTEAD OF SAYING IM NOT GONNA WATCH THAT ENTERTAINER BECAUSE HE IS MAKING BLACKS LOOK BAD, WE SHOULD BE LIKE IM GONNA SUPPORT HIM REGARDLESS. WE DONT SUPPORT FAMOUS BLACK PEOPLE AND GO SEE THEM SPEAK, WE DONT SUPPORT BLACK ARTIST AND BUY THERE MUSIC, WE DONT GO SEE BLACK MOVIES LIKE WE SHOULD. I THINK BLACKS CAN BE MORE SELFISH THAN OTHER RACES. AND THIS IS WHY I THINK WE ARENT DOING AS WELL AS OTHER RACES. HOW DO YOU FEEL? IF YOU DONT WANT TO RESPOND YOU DONT HAVE TO. LOL

well im glad yall brought my post back i thought it was important. anyway like i said earlier i am still on the fence about this one. i just really feel and understand both sides, so when i get a strong outlook on one view i will be back!

I think this is a really good post. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who feels the same way about BET. I've had major problems with BET for sometime but the straw that broke the camels back was that variety show (The Way We Do It(?)). That mess was coonery at its peak... it was a straight up minstrel show. I felt let down at that point and gave up hope. Yeah... they are owned by Viacom but we are still calling the shots... we created our own noose and tighten it everytime we cancel a show like teen summit or get rid of people like Tavis Smiley. It seems they are more focused on people voting for the next top 10, than using the station as a device to empower us. I don't blame Viacom, because this trend started long before they came into the picture. What gets me now is that these "business men" will be selling these new products. Jay-Z with his own brand of LIQUOR... keep them dumb AND ****. I'm so dissappointed right now... I'm bout to holla at **** Prez and join the People's Army because we need a revoltuion for real... i'm down RevolutionarySistah

I agree. When rappers started coming out with clothing lines, I was like good.....now we can support our own people when it comes to fashion. When rappers opened up restaurants, I was like good....now we can support our own people when it comes to fine dining. Even when some rappers opened up their own clubs, I was like okay....why not support another Black business. But, liquor :? ....the buck stops here. I refuse to support such ignorance. And the sad part is quit a few of these rappers have their own liquor products out....even Russell Simmons (who sold his clothing label like a ****...but that's another story :? ). But, I guess we should have seen it coming with all of those songs about "passing the bottle of * insert popular alcoholic beverage here *". Whatever these rappers put in their songs becomes the latest fad. It was just a matter of time before someone cashed in on it.

Good post, but my HU brotha I have to disagree with you whole heartedly on this one. There is no way in HELL that we should support black people in what ever they do. First of all let me start off by saying we must start to recycle black dollars and support our people much more than we do now. But we must realize that just because that person is black doesn't mean he has the community at heart. You see in instances like BET, I believe that we should reform it instead of getting rid of it. BET and rap culture period has way more power than it is given credit. We should turn it into something positive and it will spread through the community like wild fire. As for BET it is really kinda and the worst thing about it is we are not the only people watching us make a fool of ourselves and **** out of our queens, THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING!

I just had to cosign on what HU_Intellect wrote and give a quick amen. When I watch tv these days and I really do wonder if today's most popular black "artists" care about the image they paint of black life and culture. If all I knew of black people was what we present on television, there would be very few positive things I would have to say about today's culture. It's sad that blacks are rarely portrayed as serious characters on television; i mean our longest running drama series was soul food and that was only on for 5 yrs. BET has really fallen off in recent years as far as providing worth while television programs. I was hoping TV One would help with the situation but they've disappointed me too. It's nice to show positive black reruns but how about some new positive black programming?

HU_Intellect I think you hit it right on the nail. I agree totally. We as a people tend to be the trendsetters. It drives me up the wall that we fail to realize what a powerful weapon of influence we possess when it comes to ourselves and others. It is up to the talented "10" (which is arguable) to politic and spread knowledge and bring our people out of ignorance. Others may have conditioned our ignorance, but we are the ones who have grown to be comfortable with it.
