Hello everyone! I'm a new member of HBCUCONNECT.COM. I need to talk to a Spelman alumni or either someone who is enrolled now. I really want to go there but I want to make sure I am making the right choice. I would appreciate any response. Thanks a lotta much LOL

This is a BIG misconception! Atlanta has a ton of different cultures. The problem is a lot of people from other parts of the country come to these schools, and they never really view the city. If you go out and just travel around the city, you will realize that we are actually more of a minority,even in the city.

Yeah, but you don't get that, esp in the AUC. It's hard to see white people if the shuttle only takes you to black clubs and everyone in the AUC seems to only find time to go to Lenox on the same day

well despite the fact that atlanta as a whole may have different cultures, out little AUC city, does not. And i still beleive that the bay area and atlanta are still majorly different in my opinion when it comes to the scope of people. there may be white people but i have barely seen anything besides white and black. Not to say that there arn't others cultures out there, but i think its a far stretch to say that the city of atlanta is as diverse as the bay area of california. Thats just me, and everyone that i know from my area who goes to school out here. Its just different.

I do not disagree with you that the Bay Area might have a larger percentage of diversity than Atlanta, but your original quote stated that basically it is just black people. That statement had to be corrected because you are giving prospective students a false perception of Atlanta, and you can't consider the AUC its own city, because it is more like a large community. However, you were speaking of Atlanta in general in your first quote, and the AUC is only a small part of Atlanta. I am not trying to dismiss your quote, I just think that it needed to be clarified for those who have never really been here. :wink: And for all prospective students, I hope that anyone that is coming to Georgia for school in the AUC will not keep themselves stuck in the AUC area because then you will be living in some black college fairyland. Plus, that's just SAD.

Just wanted to say that 2day I got a letter stating that I've been selected to be in the Honors Program @ Spelman LOL

! Is anyone on here in the program, and if so could that person give me a lil information about it..how it's different from the regular curriculum, extra seminars/activities you have to participate in, the DORMS (advantages/disadvantages)...any info would be appreciated. p.s. I can't wait till Aug. 13th!!! LOL

The Honors Program is an honor to get into, so first I want to congratuale you. In the Honors Program, you have several requirements you have to complete. Before your freshmen year, you will have two books to read for the fall retreat with Morehouse Honors Program. During Freshmen Orientation, you will also have a gathering with the Morehouse Honors Program, and receive an Honors brother (so you will have 2 or 3 brothers in the end). You also have several classes that you have to take including Honors Philosophy(counts for humanities requirement too), Honors English (unless exempt), and Honors Math (unless exempt). In addition, as an upperclassmen, you will have special electives that you will have to take that are offered by the Honors Program at the beginning of the semester(most people take electives in their major). As a Honors Freshman, you also get the opportunity to stay in LLC1,and why I love my dorm, I advocate that you stay in another freshmen dorm, so you can get a true sense on what it is to be a freshman. Yes, we are the only freshmen dorm to have air, but we barely register on the poll for a freshman dorm because of the upperclassmen.However,I do advocate being in the Honors Program.
