I think there are several common misconceptions that many greeks and non-greeks have when it comes to fraternities with a social classification that deal with the ambiguities of what is exactly their purpose.
There first misconception is one that I hear quite often comes usually from the uninitiated and sometime those who are that a fraternity is a good way to make connections, particularly those within the realm of business etc etc. Although this is true to a certain degree a lot of people mistake coincidence for fact and forget that it is not one of the reasons we were founded. If it was the case these fraternities would be classified as professional which is not the case
Also most forget that most legitimate fraternities and sororities were not only founded for the making of men and women who would hopefully go on to benefit ALL of humanity in some capacity but that also the deep sense of brotherhood/sisterhood combined with some esoteric symbolism that would connect them a true brotherhood/sisterhood in the actual sense (I say legit because people think they can just up and make frats/sororities out of the blue these days, give it greek letters and it’ll be all good).
When it comes to SOCIAL fraternities the community service part comes in second/third if at all (depending on the purposes of that particular fraternity… however, usually it’s incorporated in most orgs). The most important thing that distinguishes the fraternity from a glorified honor society or community service is the deep sense of brotherhood sisterhood, alongside the esoteric symbolism. One who is part of the legitimately initiated should understand that their fraternity although “founded” on 18___ or 19___ is a continuation of secrets, societies, and other things that are as ancient as the world (Especially when one decides to dig deeper).
As for me and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia I have no regrets at all and am extremely happy that God has seen fit to put it in my life and allowed me to see it through. Although, I’ve grown to realize that a lot of people don’t understand us, I’ve also come to realize that my organization isn’t one that is meant to be understood by those on the outside (<-that’s deep right there). It is more than just a “music fraternity” as outsiders perceive it to be. Although it is a simple arrangement of words it is more accurately a “fraternity for musicians”. It is a social org where the principles and secrets of music that go back to ancient times are what we model after and govern our brotherhood with. The love of music is what connects us. Although we serve the music community immediately (much like the NPHC and the African American community) both of our goals should be to ultimately uplift humankind based off of what ever principles.
if we were to get into other classifications that would be a whole new bag because there are significant differences when it comes to professional, honorary and other classifications, yet I’ll end here even thought its still kind of sketchy to avoid writing a mini essay lol…
