Hair Question: I know for a fact that I can't stand random people doing my hair (relaxers mainly), do most girls just go back home for things of that nature, find shops in the DC area, or (God forbid) have a roomy hook them up??? I know this question probably depends on how far away one is from home.....so if it applies just disregard option #1

Yep, there are the Bisonettes (perform during bball games and outstanding competition winners), Vision dance team (a hip hop dance squad that emerged within the last few years), NSAA (african rhythmic dancing), the liturgical chapel dancers (dance at chapel services and churches in the area), and i'm sure there are a slew of others that i'm forgetting or not describing correctly lol. But let me say this, don't let the fact that it's difficult deter you from trying out. If dancing is your passion, and oh la la is something that you really want to do...then go for it. Just know that it isn't the ONLY thing that you can do at HU, and that there are always other options you can explore. Before coming to HU I saw an article about the university in Ebony and one of the pics they had was of the HUSA president (student government). I looked at my mother and said "that is gonna be me one day". Well long story short, I never ended up being HUSA president lol. But I accomplished so many other things while I was here. Were there things that I applied/auditioned/tried out for that I didn't get? Of course. But God has a plan and purpose for all things, and I am right where I need to be. And you will be too.

Welp, it would have surely been convenient for me to be ballin and have a private jet that took me back to Cali every too weeks to get my hair hooked uplol. Trust, there are PLENTY of shops in the area. However, do I recommend all of em? Nooooo sir lol. I'm natural, but when I do get it straightened, I need a REAL DEAL pressing job (i mean sum SERIOUS elbow grease). And since most women have relaxers out here, it was tough for me to find a beautician that could give me that silky press with movement that I was so used to from home. Not to mention, i was used to payin no more than 30 to get my hair on point, and out here they try to break a sistah's pockets. So what did i do? Got me a stove (the professional model) and hooked my own ish up. Not to mention, i mainly wear natural styles (fro, twists, braid outs, curls, etc.), so I haven't really had to worry about the hair shop thing recently. Nowadayz people are asking me to do their hair (NO MORE hookups for folks over here tho...unless the price is right lol). And hey, as scary as it may sound, there are actually quite a few females at HU that know how to hook some hair up. One girl I know, her mom is a beautician and sends her all kinds of professional products, so she started her own lil shop in her room lol. From cornrows, to micros, to a press, to weaves...trust, there is a chick here that can do it and do it well (not to mention cheap). Now, if you will ONLY let professionals come near your head (and u will have hair money in the college budget), then I recommend Salon Essence on U street. Demetrius and Thomas know how to work the hell outta a flat iron!

I have another question. I know someone already put a similar question up on another thread but: How comfortable do you feel being on and esspecially off of the Howard campus? i was just there today with my friend, and walking through the campus I feel perfectly fine, but when walking down 7th street, even though I was with my friend, I saw a variety of people. Some college students, some working people, and some people who looked st8 up dangerous. Howard is only like 40 minutes away from home for me, but there is so much craziness going on in D.C. (people getting shot like its nothing), that it scares me to death to make the wrong move about where to go and where not to be at. I am open for a response from anyone, but I would esspecially like to hear from ladies, being as though I am a petite lady myself, lol.

Hell I work now and I don't have a penny to my name ::sad face:: Maybe if momz is feeling sorry for me she'll send some money up my way. I stay in NC so I doubt I wanna make a 5 hr drive down here every other month. I'm not trying to be Beyonce up in college but I dayum sure ain't trying to be Lil Jon either....I just wanna look somewhat decent when people see me.

Well, I will say this...my mom did NOT want me to come to Howard. It was not too long after 9/11, plus she had heard stories about the area and she wasn't having it. That was confusing to me, considering I grew up in the hood...but hey, I guess it's different when she's right there. To be honest, Howard is not in the safest of neighborhoods. But like any place in the world, you have to make smart decisions, carry yourself well, and be aware of your surroundings. Because of where i'm from, I have alot of street smarts, so I'm not one to walk around lookin all scary and lost (sumtimes that's the very thing that will make u a target). I've never feared for my life since being at HU, and i've had nights/mornings when I came in with the sunrise (shhhh...don't tell my momma that lol). If anything, the only time that you'll really have the hardest time as a female in this area is during homecoming. They are are lined up on the street (no really) and are basically just there to holla at every single chick that passes them by. Some are decent about it, and others...well, are not so decent in their approach. But that's nothin that a nice punch to the throat won't fix. Ok...don't really do that lol And just like u said, walking down Georgia/7th you are bound to see a little bit of everything. That's what makes a city like DC so great, just as quickly as you see 3 bums in a row, you'll see 2 shirtless white dudes jogging down the street, or a old white lady walking her dog named "Foo Foo" lol. DC is so small, that u could literally walk a block and be in a completely different world. Just be sure to travel with friends, be smart, and get to know the environment. And if need be, take a self defense class. I did, so i'm confident that I could kick some **** if the occassion called for it. Either that or grab the gat that I keep in my clutch (jk...i don't really have a gat)

1. As a student in the John H. Johnson School of Communications, I can say that it definately has some good programs for those considering various career options in the communications field. I'm a radio/tv/film major (emphasis in TV production) and i've gotten a chance to take some core classes that have been beneficial. A few resources could be a lil more plentiful, but you can definately get your hands on equipment, labs, and studio time if you're interested (and you're required to anyway lol). For more info, you can refer to the website... Howard University - School of Communications 2. Yes, there are two radio stations on campus. There is a professional station that is a live broadcast all over the DC metro area (WHUR-FM). And you're gonna need a degree or a healthy resume before even thinking about touching a mic up in there lol. I don't think i've ever even been inside. I believe they have internship opportunities tho. Then there is the student station (WHBC). That is ran, produced, and promoted by actual HU students. They used to be on an AM station, but are no longer on air (I hear that will be changing soon). However, although they aren't on the radio airwaves, the show could be listened to/watched on cable on campus on Channel 51. I believe that they usually have people apply in the fall for various positions (including on air personalities). WHUR FM 96.3 - Now Broadcasting in HD Radio! ...not sure if WHBC has a site. Bmorebabygirl may be able to give u more info on that. 3. And no, Howard University does NOT have a curfew. You can come and go as you please (as long as u bring an ID so u can get back in the dorm). However, there are visitation rules (times that u can check guests in and out your dorm). 12pm-12am on the weekday and 12pm-2am on the weekends.
