I am a freshman at a community college in KY. I would like to apply to Spelman (or any school away from "home") for the fall 2008 or spring 2009 semester. If I am accepted I am concerned about living away from familiar territory. I went to a university prior to attending the CC but that was 90 minutes away from where my family lived, not 6 + hours. I currently do not have a car and I don't t know he city of Atlanta at all. I've visited the city with my family years a go and we didn't do anything but go to the malls. Does anyone have any advice or tips to share whether I go to Spelman or not?

I feel your pain. At the end of my junior year, I was determined not to go out of state.
And I still feel some anxiety. But i think of it this way: I know I'm not the only person who has stepped out of my comfort zone to go away for school. If they have done it, then i am more than capable to do it.
Think of beyond college, do you want to stay in KY forever? A lot of the times, students will find a job in their field near wherever they went to school b/c they tend to build their network with businesses in that area. Also, going to an out of state/out of comfort zone school allows you to determine whether or not you REALLY want to be away from home and it gives you a opportunity to learn a new place. Whereas if you stay in KY, graduate and decide to move away, it'll be hit or miss in finding a good place...and job. 6hrs isn't THAT far, when you have to take off a day of work just so you can drive to your destination, that's far. Just something to think about.
...and Welcome to the forums!
I think that you should consider going to Spelman. You'll miss your family and everything but the experiences you will have will make it all worthwhile. I will be going away to NCAT next fall which is a long way from Indiana. Me personally I feel that I need a change of scenery. Plus A&T is a really good school. But your friends and family might try to talk you out of going so its really up to you.
