FAMU prepares for more freshmen Florida A&M University also is expecting an enrollment increase this fall.Patricia Green-Powell, vice president for student affairs, said FAMU should better last year's record of 2,100 freshmen. "We would love to top that and will always strive to do that," Green-Powell said. She's basing her prediction on a 3-percent rise in applications over this time last year. Friday was FAMU's deadline to apply for the fall term, so university officials are still processing paperwork. They admit students after they make sure they meet FAMU standards. A $20 admissions deposit is required. Many FAMU students usually register for the fall before the spring semester ends. This year, however, students will have to wait until July 5. That's when FAMU's new Web-based registration system will be up and running. It can be accessed through the "Our FAMU" link of the school's Web site, www.famu.edu. Already, students can check their financial-aid status online. It is a new service that is resulting in fewer phone calls to the financial-aid office, Green-Powell said. "We still get them, but not like we were," Green-Powell said.
