Hello my name is Terrell Sharp from DeSoto, Texas. I attended DeSoto high school. Historically Black College/ University have contributed with great significance to American History. Prior to the Civil War, colored people were limited in the aspect of education. The majority of blacks who had any education at all had to struggle and teach themselves. Historically Black College/ University provided an equal opportunity for the American people. There have been many great inventors and many great Americans who graduate from Historically Black College/ University. Booker T. Washington was a prime example of a successful product of a Historically Black College/ University. He attended the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. He later began his own institution, now known as the famous Tuskegee University. A very well known protégé of Booker T. Washington who is responsible for multiple inventions of the American society is Dr. George Washington Carver. Another graduate of a Historically Black College/ University who invented the enjoyable peanut butter. He also invented or modernized adhesives, axle grease, bleach, buttermilk, chili sauce, fuel briquettes, ink, instant coffee, linoleum, mayonnaise, meat tenderizer, metal polish, paper, plastic, pavement, shaving cream, shoe polish, synthetic rubber, talcum powder and wood stain to name a few and each of these products are used daily throughout America.
Historically Black College/ University’s are very relevant today. A lot of America’s History is held within the Historically Black College/ University’s. Majority of the predominantly white colleges don’t take the time to elaborate on how important Historically Black College/ University’s are to American History. There are plenty of children who are not aware that inventors from Historically Black College/ University’s created the traffic light, the brakes on a car, and the cotton gin but they do know the companies who produce those commodities. Historically Black College/ University’s give a great college experience to any student who would like to learn about the strength of our ancestors as well as the contribution they made to American History. Historically Black College/ University’s are continuing to mold successful Americans today. The list goes on from famous athletes like Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Earl Monroe, and Steve McNair who are magnanimously known Americans, also Oprah Winfrey who is a television mogul. Next, you have great American entertainers such as Sean “P.Diddy” Combs and American Idol winner Rueben Studdard. This is living proof that Historically Black College/ University’s are very relevant while constantly adding to American history and success.
There are a tremendous amount of lessons that can be learned from Historically Black College/ University’s. A lot of the African American heritage is bestowed in Historically Black College/ University’s. Some people believe that if they attend an HBCU it makes them inferior but in all reality life is what you make it. Attorney Willie Garrett attended a small school in Raleigh, North Carolina called Shaw University and now is one of the leading attorneys in America. So it’s not optimistic to dwell on where you come from but to acknowledge where you are going.
