Historically Black Colleges and Universities are institutions that were established prior to 1964 in order to give Black Americans the chance to obtain an outstanding postsecondary education. There was once a time when Black Americans were denied the right to learn how to read and write, and HBCU’s not only changed that right, but have contributed to changing American history by doing so. By educating Black Americans HBCU’s helped the ongoing fight against poverty, racism, a segregated society, and most importantly illiteracy. Historically Black Colleges and Universities are relevant today not only because of the experience, but also because it is some African Americans only chance. It is no secret that America is still suffering with poverty today, and most African Americans can not afford to go to a predominantly white Ivey league school whereas, HBCU’s offer the same in-depth education.
Yes, some Historically Black Colleges and Universities are just as expensive as the all white ones, but most of them are not. HBCU’s are also more lenient with the admission requirements. By reducing some of the admission requirements you give African American students a second chance to improve in academics, and give them a chance to obtain an education that will help them achieve a job in the career field of their choice. The lessons that we learn from HBCU’s are ones that will last a lifetime. HBCU’s offer lessons of achievement in the classroom and also outside of the classroom. By sitting inside of the classroom of a HBCU you are being prepared for what the world has to offer, and how to use it to your advantage. By being outside of the classroom of a HBCU is a different accomplishment all on its own, because just by being on a HBCU campus you are taking advantage of the resources that were made for you by the people who came before us and they would be proud that the legacy continues.
