Fisk U. Appeals **** That Blocked Sale of a Share of Its Art
Fisk University is going back to court to win approval to sell a share of its ownership of a collection of a valuable art collection that was donated to the Nashville institution by the artist Georgia O’Keeffe. According to The Tennessean, a local newspaper, the university filed an appeal late last week of a state judge’s **** that blocked Fisk’s plan to sell a 50-percent share of the collection to an Arkansas museum.
The judge, Chancellor Ellen Hobbs Lyle of the Davidson County Chancery Court, has repeatedly ruled against various attempts by Fisk to sell paintings from the collection or a share of ownership in the collection itself. Last March, she ruled in the university’s favor on the question of whether it had violated the terms of the donation to such an extent that it should lose custody of the artworks. But that **** also stipulated that Fisk must put the 101-piece collection back on display. The deadline for meeting that condition, according to The Tennessean, is October 6.
In its appeal, the university also challenges the **** that it should forfeit the collection if it does not return the art to display. —Charles Huckabee
