I'm a fan of Rain-X products because they actually work! The first product I like is their Rain-X De-Icer (or De-Icer & Bug Remover 2-in-1), this stuff REALLY works! If you're tired of scraping ice off your windshield, this is for you. Just replace your blue windshield wiper fluid with this and you're set! If you're in a cold region, get yours today. One note, it may not be found in your area. It's not sold here in Albany, GA b/c they say folk use it to get high! So ask for it in your automotive section or auto store. And it's only like $2 Another product I use is their Glass Treatment to repel rain while you're driving. You hardly have to use your wipers if you have this on your windshield when it rains. The water just rolls off! Nothing much to explain about this one. It takes a little elbow grease to apply but the results are worth it. It comes in various containers so the price varies.

To minimize scratching the paint on your vehicle while hand washing it, wash the bottom of it all the way around first. Most big particles of dirt/rocks are collected down there and if you wash from top to bottom or bottom to top you're more prone to have some of those pieces in your sponge/cloth. So wash the bottom first, empty and rinse out your wash bucket and use a clean sponge/cloth to finish washing the rest of your vehicle.

Rain x does work. I use it myself. Who the heck wants to go through all that trouble of making fresh water for a carwash? Not me. But wouldn't the rocs and scratchy stuff collect on the bttom of the bucket? I'm in Florida so I can't try driving with my windows up and if I did I would still be wasting gas with the A/C on...probably more.
