Atlanta University was founded as the nation's first graduate institution for blacks in 1865. In 1988, it officially merged with a neighboring institution named Clark College, which focused on undergraduate liberal arts studies. It is known today as Clark-Atlanta University and counts James Weldon Johnson as a prominent alum.
