Asking for too much?

Ok, i am interested in sorority X and sorority Y. I went to the first nite of sorority Y's rush, Monday, because up until a year ago-ive always wanted to be apart of them, until now. So i go to their rush, because i am really interested in pledging. Well to my dissapointment, they turned me off very quickly. I didnt expect everything to run perfect, but i expected some order. The "games" they had us play, were very disorganized, only two of the sorors talked the whole time-the other ones either a.)werent there or b.) chillin, eatin and talkin to their brothers. The whole meeting-to me and a friend of mines-was a hot mess. I just thought that during rush, the sorority was supposed to be setting an example of what their organization was all about, and if they cant even come together and run their meetings right-what makes me think that they can run their organization with some discipline? And their website-is like a year old-how are you supposed to be helping people who are intrested if u have info from last school year? I dont know-maybe i am just being too picky, but im the type of person who is all about perfection in everything. And sorority X is making my decision easier because they seem so much more organized-at a greek social in the beggining of the year-they gave out pamphlets and were the most friendliest out of all the other sororities, they have an up-to-date web page and i received a quick response from one of the sorors. And right now im really leaning towards them now after seeing what sorority Y has to offer. Yes i have done the research, the reading-talking to people in those certain organizations, but after that meeting i really didnt feel comfortable continuing to be apart of them, therefore i didnt go back because i dont want to do somethin i will regret later.Do you think im asking for too much as in the little things (web pages, organized rush, communication w/ the sorors)?

Reading her post made me think of something... To the Greeks: Is it a bad idea to go to multiple rushes of different sororities, or you should only be seen at the rushes and events of the sorority that you are most interested in and ultimately wanna pledge??

Multiple Rushes: VERY Bad Multiple Events: Good

So you're basing your "decision" off of the chapter, not the organization as a whole? That's problematic. If any of us Greeks were naive enough to base our perceptions of an entire org off of one chapter then there are probably a lot of us who wouldn't be a part of that org. #2-Your use of the word "soror" so freely and comfortably is also problematic. Make it a habit to say "members" or "the ladies of ____" rather than "the sorors." You are not in a sorority and some people may take extreme offense if you address them as soror. Not trying to be mean, just trying to help :-) And to cosign laidbackfella, going to multiple rushes is a huge no-no. I don't know how things work at your school but around here we find out any and everything. If you went to another org's rush, the "other org" you were referring to WILL find out and it may be a wrap for your chances, just being realistic. This is why it is important that you thoroughly do your research on the org of your interest and, in my opinion, base your decision off of what that org has accomplished internationally, not just the chapter on your yard.

I was just having that discussion. I think that is hugely important for an aspirant to realize.

Thank you sooo much for saying that.... I was going to ask that question. Like, God forbid, the sorority you wanted to be a part of had a questionable membership on your campus (let's say.. at Lincoln, they were all considered ****... just a makeup scenario guys), and you didn't like the girls, should you A) surge ahead and send in an application.. or B)think about another sorority? I've heard mixed reactions, becuz many old heads say that you should like your intended chapter members, but then I've heard some people say that it is most important to view the organization as a whole... I've seen FAR TOO MANY cases (and in my opinion, one case is far too many) of people who no longer talk to their chapters, because they made a misinformed and ignorant decision when it came time to pledge their allegiance. So... what do y'all think is most important?

I don't it's my place to answer the aforementioned question, but I'll bite anyway. I would say while liking your chapter of initiation is important, it shouldn't be the sole basis of your decision to join to organization. You have to view the organization as a whole because that's what simply matters most. Just as you look negatively at that chapter as a reflection of the whole organization, it can be flipped. What if the intended intiation chapter is upholding the original values of the organization as a whole when on a broad scale, the national organization is lacking? Simply put, you're not a member of the undergraduate chapter forever but you are a member of the organization for life.

I've seen far too many cases where someone from a fraternity/sorority would have a falling out within their chapter, for whatever reason, get mad, and never be active again. That right there is hella weak and sad to me. My love for AKA supercedes my love for my chapter; that's just me personally. Now nothing terrible has ever happened for me to just stop speaking to my LSs or anyone in my chapter, thank God. But I am graduating this May and it will be time for me to move on to graduate life with a grad chapter, and I look foward to it. I love my sorority and everything it stands for, which is why I'd never turn my back on AKA, even if I did have a falling out with my chapter Sorors. People "pledge their allegiance" for all the wrong reasons and need to hold themselves responsible for that, not the org they "chose" to become a part of. People are getting geeked over stereotypes and basing their 'decisions' off of them: "the _____s are the best steppers and they are so crunk. Everyone likes them because they are so cool and the _____s are their brothers....ooooh I wanna be a _____!" or "Man, the _____s are known for being the most handsome, plus they get a lot of girls...man I wanna pledge _____!" It all goes downhill from there.
