In my opinion, tying up loose ends and having a clear reason to break up aren't necessarily the same thing. There's always a reason why it doesn't work out, even if there's no reason in particular. You could just say what you had with this person has run it's course. But I think having a clear reason to break up is important because it's insight into not making the same mistake twice.
