Bowie State University Alumna, Mrs. Rose Wiseman, Endows $30,000 Scholarship
Mrs. Rose Shockley Wiseman
Bowie, MD (BlackNews.com) - Mrs. Rose Shockley Wiseman, class of 1937 graduate, recently began a $30,000 endowment fund to support scholarships for elementary and secondary education majors. The J. Alexander & Rose Shockley Wiseman Scholarship Fund is named for Mrs. Wiseman and her husband, the late Dr. Joseph Alexander Wiseman, who was the first director and founder of the Bowie State University Graduate School.
The newly established fund will strengthen the university's endowment and ensure long-term stability for scholarships in the teaching profession. The Private Donation Incentive Program of the State of Maryland will match the funds placed into the scholarship at a rate of 2:1, which will accelerate the fund's value to $90,000.
Mrs. Wiseman began her teaching career in Charles County in 1937. Her accomplishments include serving as principal of the two-room Bowie Elementary School, teaching at Bates High School where she led the creative writing club and published six volumes of Threads magazine along with her students, and associate professor at Bowie State College (University). Mrs. Wiseman is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
As a wife and mother of one, she continued her education at Hampton Institute and earned a B.S. degree. In 1951, she was one of the first African Americans to graduate from the University of Maryland with a M.Ed. degree.
Her son, Adrian, and his wife, Christelle Newman Wiseman, earned degrees from Bowie State in 1969 and 1970 respectively. They have two children, Anedra Wiseman Bourne and Christopher Wiseman.
If there is an interest in supporting the scholarship, checks may be made payable to Bowie State University Foundation (BSUF). Write J. Alexander & Rose Shockley Wiseman Scholarship Fund in the memo section of the check and mail to: BSUF, Bowie State University, 14000 Jericho Park Road 20715.
