I also commend the President Swaggart who rightfully spoke up for my kids... I've been hearing a lot about this and I've read Courtland Milloy's article and what I was wondering is were HU students really protesting against Bush or were they protesting the fact that because of Bush they were told to go to the back of the Caf to get their food? Just wondering.

People were out there for different reasons. However, i highly doubt that there was one student out there protesting becuz massah took their conebred and chicken away...which is what the article insinuated

"My kids" were upset by the negative charges leveled against them. They were also not happy about the way the whole thing went down from jump. All in all if it gets the President(Swygart) behind the students then this had some real good in it. I wrote to The Post. That is how hot I was behind what was written originally and in his subsequent rebuttal. You just do not attack kids like that. What activism did he participate in when he was in lord knows whos college? My friend is there visiting her kid and she marched to the Post. She has reach so this is not nearly over. You just can not slam a whole group of kids and get away with it. My word!

I see, I see. Milloy's article from today was pretty interesting. What I've kind of taken from the whole situation is that young black people period, especially those in college do not stand up enough and protest for those things we have opinions about and are pressing issues for today unless we get to the point where we are inconvenienced, then you can't shut us up. And from reading the first article I don't think Milloy was just criticizing the students but the administration as well by pinpointing the fact that students were asked to go to the back of the caf and had classes canceled just because Bush was there. I don't think Milloy will apologize, but who knows...

Yea, he really did tell the truth about us not being politically active enough, although my reason for rallying was because he misrepresented Howard and the most offensive thing that he said was that we protested because we couldn't eat soul food. I'm not only frustrated at him, but also some HU students who just got ignorant on the e-mails they sent him and even yesterday at the rally. He's visiting us in the next two weeks though and I'm proud about that because he will be relaying a message that students need to hear, in an ACCEPTABLE manner. I seriously doubt that he will retract his statements though.

...OK, SO...that er um "rally" did not quite go as "planned" but, thats alright. I will be present when he visits... SBS & LJ7...good analysis and helpful perspectives. Milloy will not apologize...this is getting HIM major publicity...and you know how that 15 minutes goes... stay tuned.

right. I don't necessarily disagree with his motives. I just think that he went about expressing himself in the wrong way. Regardless of what the underlying message was, the Howard student body was pretty much presented as a minstrel show. All we needed was black face make-up, watermelon, handkerchiefs to tie around our heads and the story would have been complete. As for the 2nd article/rebuttal, i was in more agreement with it becuz at least he had the dignity to back up his opinion with examples and valid reasoning. Journalists of integrity actually have the decency to back up their statements with proof, and when u actually do that, folkz really can't argue with u. That is what true journalism is supposed to be about. Can the students at Howard University be more politically active? Of course. But i think HU is just a microcosm of our society as a whole. Our entire generation could be way more conscious than we are. So although i think it's an honor that some folkz hold the Mecca at a higher standard, let's not forget that this issue is bigger than HU. Belittling an entire institution isn't the way to spark a positive change. If anything, it's only going to cause more resistance and conflict within our own culture. Who needs the **** when we so easily destroy each other on our own?
