To ALL greeks...Question about "discretion"...

Hi Everyone, This is my first time posting something on HBCU-Connect, I am somewhat of a "lurker" LOL! But anyway, I had a question/comment that has really been burning in my mind since I started school at FAMU in the fall...Why is there such thing as "legacy" because most times when your parent is in a BGLO they sort of "breed" you to become a member, and that makes it REALLY hard for kids when they start college because they are not supposed to act like they are interested in ANYTHING as apart of the whole "discretion" thing. That is why I sorta wish I wasn't exposed at such a young age because it seems so backwards... parents instill things in your mind from when u r 1, put "future XYZ" shirts on you at 5, put u in fashionetta in middle school, keep u in the "teen" program all throughout high school and then u are a debutante your senior year, THEN to top it all off u get a scholarship sponsered by XYZ, and THEN ALL OF SUDDEN u are supposed to forget everything and act stupid like you don't know what u want to be. I really don't UNDERSTAND that! CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN IT TO ME!!

Just because you got a scholarship from XYZ does not mean that you are going to be XYZ. Discretion is solely based on your actions or lack there of. Only answer questions if they are asked of you. Don't give too much information and by that I mean don't volunteer information like my mom is xyz and my dad is abc. No one cares and that makes it seem that you are trying to ride their coattails. Don't act like just because your were a debutante of xyz that you are a member of xyz. So many fools do that mess and just get crapped on. Just be cool. Only let the necessary people know that you're interested. Just my '06 cents.

I get what U R saying BUT my question was... OR WHAT I WAS TRYING TO SAY was...why do BGLO have such programs because it seems to me that all they do is break peeps hearts...U go throughout middle and high school being an XYZ teen so u grow a love and attachment for that org and then when u get to college u don't make line BUT since this "love" was instilled in you at such a YOUNG age u don't even think of pursuing membership in any other org. And I can say first hand that most BGLO youth auxillary programs are breeding grounds for XYZ because as apart of my intake process (YEAH we had an "intake" process) we had to not only know the history of the auxillary group but also the history of XYZ and then at a Archonette (dunno if I spelled that right) step-show last year, one of the groups actually said in their step "A future *BLANK* is what we plan to be"... AND just to put it out there in case anyone was wondering... I am not the type that reps XYZ teens or tells everyone my mother is XYZ and my dad is ABC, as a matter of fact MOST peeps even the XYZ's that I am close to don't even know that I am legacy and some don't even know that I am interested in XYZ, I just simply wanted to know why do these grad chapters (because in most cases they are the ones advising these teen "groups") don't tell u about the whole "discretion" thing when u start the group or at least as a senior in high school becuz A LOT of people don't know about being discrete so they screw theirselves up before it even "really counts"
